Cork city has gone to the dogs.

Every single day I see guards. And no, they are not following me

I live reasonably close to one of the biggest Garda Stations in the country. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw gardai out on the beat, actually out walking on the street. THere's a few going around the place in cars, and parking them wherever they feel like often causing traffic issues, but actually walking the beat? No 😞

There is an increased visibility around Oliver plunkett st area I often see gardai walking around the area, As somebody else posted the Simon
house is a magnet for scum and ideally should be moved but where to?

You would have to think it was a battery issue, Not great PR for the EV lobby

the number of apartments here that have gone up in smoke because of lads charging their electric scooters is mad. most apartment buildings have put a ban on charging in place but most couldn’t give a shit.

we did our fire safety pass refresher a few years ago and they were showing videos of different fires and the lithium battery ones were lethal. they produce their own oxygen so can reignite after extinguishing.

I see them both walking and in cars.

Saw a video from somewhere of someone with their scooter in a lift. The battery started smoking and caught fire. He was dead by the time the lift doors opened. 😞

Would you say you see them once a day on foot, or more, or less? I don't even see them going from their cars into the stations tbh.

Yeah. Same for me. And around the Post Office on Oliver Plunkett street, as said. On Patrick Street, MacCurtain Street. You'd see them on nights out. You'd see them getting grub, as, of course, everyone needs to eat. As the Irish Examiner said there are natural consequences of being in a big city. Cork is hopping at the moment. This will happen.

As for the homeless situation the amount of decent interactions I've had with homeless people vastly, vastly outnumber the amount of times I've even felt intimidated. There used to be a fella sleeping outside a church near me. I'd occasionally bring him a bit of grub, just chicken, cheese and bread when I had it, as for him his concern was safety and he didn't engage with the supports. I think Simon eventually found him and managed to help him out, as his needs were low (just housing.) When my brother moved into his gaff the first person to welcome him to the building was a guy there who'd been found low-cost accommodation by a homeless charity. The fella welcomed him, offered to help him carry boxes, said if he ever wanted to watch a match he had a dodgy box with all the channels. My brother has had a few cans with him over the years while watching football. Another time I was sitting on a bench by the Lee, having a coffee, fella rocks up with some cans and asks what I'm reading. It was an Alice Maher art book. I was telling him to join the library, they had enough art books to check out. We got chatting about how he loved his trip to Dublin in school when he was taken to the galleries and museums. Said he'd love to know more about it. Even offered me a can, the lovely fella.

These are people with troubles, mostly, who just need a break and some support. Just because someone is homeless, or even begging, doesn't mean they're a threat.

Simon Community moved to the hostel down near Jury's Inn must be around 20 years ago. It was hailed as a very good centre and there wasn't an overwhelming of the neighbourhood, which of course also included the "red light area" at the back. There was always what we'd term "winos" around and there were the same usual faces who generally shouted and roared and had the occasional argie bargie but only amongst themselves. It's the upsurge in drugs has caused the herds of them around town now. Think someone described it as the living-dead or zombies and the more plentiful they become then the more brazen they are.

And a bit like the zombie apocolypse one-on-one you'd swat them like a fly as they're so emaciated and uncoordinated. But three or four of them not so much.

Glad to hear that the gardai are back on the beat in town - looking forward to seeing them out and about.
