HuhIn days of yore there would have been a "deputation" go around to him, put manners on him, and warned him as to the consequences of there ever being a repeat. Now it's all done (or actually not done) in court. That way the legalistas can at least make a few bob out of it.![]()
Huh
There was an iron curtain of secrecy surrounding domestic violence in Ireland in days of yore.
The state and church literally regarded it as a private marital matter and turned a blind eye to it.
Even marital rape wasn't outlawed until the 1990's ffs.
It wasn't "hard men" who went around changing all of that, but women themselves.
I'll see your anecdotal evidence and raise it with many stories my parents had of people they knew who were subject to marital violence. Loads and loads of cases, it was mainly seen as terribly misfortunate but a private familal affair.Happen to know of two cases in detail from the 1990s where guys who'd been "knocking their partner about" with his partner in one case, wife in the other, got a visit and "a baytin" themselves. One got a hurley full in the mush and mended his ways.
And yes women became far more "visible" in society with the wane of the state and church influence, but alas some men still think they can be violent to women, and as MOE pointed out, some appear to be getting away with it.![]()
