cork airport to go (temporarily) BANG!

Given that volume of Ryan Air traffic under DAA’s watch, letting the old terminal just rot instead of becoming a Ryan Air hub and driving on the airport traffic seems very short-sighted.
That suggestion about Ryanair using the mothballed old terminal was long before Covid.
At that time Ryanair had a lot less services from Cork and the thinking was, if they were allowed use it then other legacy carriers would be detered from operating from Cork and that Cork would be dependent on Ryanair akin to Shannon and a few others.

Also infairness to Ryanair, they kept operating during Covid so hit the ground running after it and took over all of the Emerald / Stobart routes ex Cork.

So did Cork Airport lose out anything at all by not granting Ryan Air access to the old terminal?

No because now they are planning on demolishing that old building to replace it with extended gates from the new terminal.

Would you have preferred for Cork Airport to be over a barrell by Ryanair akin to Shannon and a few other airports?

I'd have preferred if Cork Airport wasn't subservient to dubliin airport in everything. Didn't Cork airport lose out on freight? And what's the current state of the debt for Cork Airport, it used be some eye-watering number has that been resolved?

Passengers are the lifeblood of an airport and at long last we seem to be getting connections through Cork Airport that should grow numbers again. I'm delighted to see that happening but I'd rather Cork Airport was run from and for Cork Airport, rather then be seen as some bastard-child in the corner by DUBLIN AIRPORT Authority while they go on and on and on about The Cap preventing tourists accessing the country and the big need for another terminal up there and a railway link and gold taps in every bathroom etc etc all at the taxpayers expense.

Are you referring to DHL moving their nighttime freight service to Shannon ?
Shannon is not Dublin, but you knew that i trust.
Shannon undercut Cork to take it.

If Cork was a standalone operation then that sort of crap would be going on wholesale and its not.

It would suit Ryanair if Cork was desperate for their flights and conducting in a race to the bottom with Shannon & Kerry.
This sort of carry on then deters the legacy carriers from serving respective airports.

So while its not ideal to have Dublin Airport Authority running Cork, then its better than Cork begging the likes of Ryanair

Being part of the DAA has actually helped Cork. They are just at the start of a €200m capital investment which will grow the airport in size quite considerably.

Shannon has seen much smaller growth in recent years than Cork. Cork is now back at the peak passenger numbers of 2008. Shannon is over 1 million passengers down.

And Shannon has a much longer runway than Cork does which accommodate larger aircraft such as the Boeing 767.

Shannon undercut Cork to get the freight service business. If Cork serving a bigger population hinterland, and especially under the allegedly benign watch of even bigger Dublin Airport I'm not sure how Shannon could afford to undercut Cork?

The measure of whether Cork Airport is providing good enough range of flights and good prices is surely inversely proportional to the number of people driving or taking the bus from Cork to dublin airport. I mean there's nobody can convince me that going through dublin airport is a nice experience - like dublin itself it's a shithole, but we still have thousands travelling from Cork up there despite the obvious extra hassle.

Hopefully, the flights to the US that you've hinted at previously will actually materialise. It would be ....dare I say it....a gamechanger!

There are still numerous destinations that are only available from Dublin and not only the long haul options.
Hopefully with likes of Turkey, Greece, Seville, Prague, etc opening up from Cork in last couple of years, the number of people forced to endure Dumplin airport will significantly decrease.

Here is how Shannon undercut Cork, they have income also from the adjoining business Park, as in its part of their business.

Airlines are businesses and they will assign their assets to the destinations which give them the best return.
That is the reality of it, i don't know if the DAA will do a deal with an airline say if they want to operate a flight to X out of Dumplin 7 days a week, then would DAA say grand but you also have to operate one from Cork too.

I agree with you on Dumplin airport, why anyone down here thinks it is beneficial to go through that kip, is beyond me.

Here is hoping for that US service 🙏
