Casement park

Irrelevant, the grounds are owned entirely by the GAA not in public ownership
As are soccer and rugby grounds. The Aviva Stadium for example cannot be used for sports other than soccer or rugby. The Irish Government contributed €191M of a total build cost of €410M. €110M of a total build cost of €265M was provided for Croke Park. The IRFU and FAI received more money for a smaller stadium and can host fewer sports.

In any case, I wouldn’t trust the state to keep any stadium in fit order. They’d probably have to outsource it to a stadium management company which would end up costing them money.

Yes so why repeat the sins of the past.

More money than £43 million not inclusing whatever they commit to today with no hope of generating a return?

Money spent on sports capital projects isn’t predicated on a financial return. It’s a societal benefit. The Irish Government have committed a very small percentage of the proposed total cost of this project. Stormont should front up and yes the GAA should also. If we want state ownership of stadia and sports infrastructure then let them be fully taxpayer funded. I’m not sure that would provide great value for money.

Then the GAA can build one.

If the Irish Govt are stumping up more let them build a provincial ground in Letterkenny.

The GAA can sell casement for housing

Spot on.

Windsor Park and Ravenhill were given around £42mill from Stormont and were upgraded by the IFA and IRFU.

The GAA so far has got £62m from Stormont, £50m from Westminster, £43m from Dublin, and they're out with begging bowl this morning looking for more?

I don't see why any more taxpayers money should be spent on this project.
If the GAA don't want to pony up then that's their lookout. Abandon the project and return the funding or build a stadium they're able to afford.

I laugh at those who say the Irish government do nothing for those in the north , They have pledged 50m for casement park, millions more for the A5 motorway, Magee college Derry

Ignoring the funding for the moment.

The Pairc has been a financial and practical disaster. A mostly empty stadium with non existent transport links that is at very best filled once or twice a year.

Casement Park would be even worse. If they get an odd Ulster football final they will fill it maybe one year in three.

Build it and they will come might have worked for Kevin Costner in his corn field but our own local experience should show its no reason for building a large capacity white elephant.
