Casement park

Jarlath Burns calling on stormont to fill the funding gap.

£15 from the GAA.

Why can't the GAA stump up some more?

Do the GAA have a stadium strategy or is the plan to build 32 35K stadiums aroud the country?

Talks of it to be reduced to Thomond park level capacity to reduce cost.
They are keeping it at the current uefa standard because of their planning approval. They say they can’t change the plans now and downgrade capacity because it’ll have to go through planning again which could take another 2 years.
The current planning permission only has months left to run hence the urgency. If they don’t act then the planning permission lapses and we are back to waiting at least 2 years delay again. Burns indicated however that they may have pulled a legal masterstroke by sending in the clearance work months ago. They feel that engineers onsite clearly show “commencement of works” and trumpeted this in all the papers at the time. A legal quagmire if there was ever one.

Unlikely. But it would be no harm to have a 30k stadium in the second biggest city on the island with a population circa 1m and nearby motorway access.
I mean, it’s not going into some backwater like balleybofey or clones like (although you could argue the case as to why not).

If this gets bogged down in legal battles it will obviously add to the cost, Ironically it was local residents who objected in 2011 who led
to this situation, SDLP/ALLIANCE are piling pressure on SF/DUP now, They know DUP will fight against it and SF wont go down the road of
having to make unpopular cuts from other departments, I reckon the irish govt will up theri contribution, GAA should double their contribution from 15m

Yes, it makes sense to have a 35k stadium in Belfast, they can pay for one.

But why do you need all the other 35k stadiums all over the place that fill once or twice a year

John Duggan made that point on newstalk , Why the need for so many stadia? In fairness to Burns he has put pressure on Stormont
to up their contribution but the GAA need to do the same, The irish govt are meeting the GAA tomorrow, Id say it will point to irish govt
throwing more into the pot,

Burns was on Morning Ireland a few months ago and over the next few years between stadium upgrades and COEs being built they were forking out nearly 1bn

There’s a geography issue here for the GAA, which prides itself as a 32 County Association. There are large stadia in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway but not Belfast. The 6 counties is poorly served in general for GAA stadia.
