Cardinals

Cardinals appear to be proof positive that in today's scene you need employ industry insiders, a marketing/social media team and massive injections of cash to buy your way in before you even record a note of music.

Runner - whose first single I liked - appear to be another example of this. Barely played outside Dublin (if at all - might not have played outside Whelan's...) but are now on the bill for gigs in America.

Tell me more. How did this happen? I have heard of Cardinals and seen them tipped as a "next big thing", but did not know they were already doing the groundwork. It seems any label wants a band with a ready made public before they invest a penny.

Well they are due to face the ultimate acid test on Friday.
My old cranky head after a hard Friday's slog at work added to sobriety because I have to drive an hour home and be up early for a big road trip on Saturday morning.

Im mainly going as an excuse to go out with the son because he loves local gigs and I knew he couldn't afford the tickets.
Im also nosey to see what they've done to the Savoy.

That was really poor.

The sound was sludgy. The stage craft was non existent. The crowd were yapping.

This band needs to go to hamburg for 6 months..They were loose as fuck.

it was like a battle of the bands.

Great to have the Savoy back

That's such a pity to hear 😕
Yeah. I had been looking forward to it so was disappointed.

it's hard to discern how much of it was terrible sound and how much was the band. But they are not unrelated

The earlier songs in the set were nothing but crashing cymbals. Could not hear the vocal
we were middle of the room towards the back..They actually sounded better when I went out through 2 solid doors to the jacks.

They rattled through the album with no encore

Lead singer only spoke once to flog merch.

I'm off this bandwagon

Harsh.

I will agree that the sound was totally in the toliet. However it was for both bands all over the venue. The support act had a back up singer singing into a dead mike it seemed.
Went right up the front because that's the only place the sound was barely passable.
Let's hope this was a sound guy thing and not a Savoy thing because this kind of shit will kill a venue.

As for the bands? I thought they were good. The next big thing? Not really but they are young and seem to be part of a very alive, very vibrant live music scene thats big with the 'kids'.
They're is definitely something happening locally which is great. Baby Rat another local band has the Savoy sold out for a midweek gig towards the end of march and between the Savoy, Fred's and the Poor Relation there seems to be a thriving scene of local young bands.

Personally I liked the wall of sound both bands were producing, I thought Pebbledash were great epecially the loud songs.
Both bands need work and polish but lets face it both the Frank's and the Sultans were the same when they started off.
I wouldn't be too harsh, there's a bang of a scene that hasn't existed since the late 80s and 90s germinating in Cork and Munster in general and hopefully it will flower.

But for fucks sakes sort out the sound.

With great sound bites to the press comes great responsibility. For your big home town post album launch gig. This was a Major Whiff
