Buying a car in NI

12 year old 2l diesel automatic, I have it 9 years. Costing about €2k a year now

The engine is still as smooth as the day I bought it though, and it’s a rocket. Has some horsepower upgrade
Ah that’s a pity, €2k a year includes service? You'll lose about 2.5 to 3k a year on the three year old.
You’ll miss the power when you trade for the hybrid. We’ve both a diesel and a petrol hybrid. The hybrid does about 70mpg, the diesel could get close if it wasnt so much fun to drive.

Ah I suppose it depends year on year. Last year it was the D?? Box under the thing, something to do with build up of diesel particulates or something

Now it’s another 2 things, will be another 2k. Next year it will be something else, it’s just got to that point with wear and tear

I’d rather lose the value off a car that doesn’t need to go to the garage every year than have to deal with one fixing something I know nothing about and hoping they’re honest and dealing with it

Hopefully won’t have to lose power either, but maybe it’s part of the deal now. My yoke accelerates the same at 100kph as it does at 40kph

The Polish are great at fixing those problems, by drilling out the dpf and deleting the egr (blanking plate)

Its the first thing the new owner will do! :-)

I wonder what a 2 litre corolla touring would cost to bring down south.

I’ve driven hybrids for years
Great yokes
Bar the motorway

Ok, the NI thing sounds like it’s not worth the hassle and I might need to move on this quicker than I thought. Is there a better site to look on or are Carzone and Donedeal the same thing with different backgrounds?

You’re welcome to it Fed! It’s been a magic car to be fair, great drive, fits the entire house in the boot, and when you need to overtake it won’t be found wanting.

If you are into cars, or have a bit of patience, or don’t live in Dublin where mechanics might actually be reasonable, then fixing it and keeping it going would be a great option because there isn’t a glitch with the engine, but I have none of the above so it’s time to change it and get another car I’ll keep for years.

I think I’ll get rid of the other car soon as well, and just have the one, we don’t need 2 truth be told.
We did that a few years ago, DM, and haven't looked back. Herself needs a car for work, but I don't. The only times I miss having two cars is when I have to fly for work, depending on when your flight leaves or departs, getting a coach up can be a right pain in the hoop.

I've noticed that I often have to use the bike when I'd have been tempted otherwise to drive I'd there was a car sitting there.

Very easy to use the car when it's there. My bike is shagged from sitting in a shed, rust everywhere, but I'd still love to get it fixed up because it could turn an hour's walk and an hour back into 40 minutes. That's a massive saving on your day. With driving a car it's even more hassle as you're look at the cost of fuel, and parking, but it just feels easier.

Over the summer I'd like to think I'd wait for a dry window, which we have enough of, and get out there.

This is 100% it. With the very best of intentions, unless it's a lovely day out, I'd say I'd be tempted to take the car a lot of times. But you never regret bringing the bike.
