Bus Connects Plan

So in your view, a city is like a museum or antique. Any efforts to improve it cannot be made because of this mindset?
We had a tram system in Cork before by the way...

We could easily have a new Cork LUAS type system in Cork, but it would mean some streets would have to be cleared from cars. This is what people will give out about, but in the same breath declare Public Transport as not being good enough.

Yea, this isn't true mate. Stop making up shite.

As to the point, the reason footpaths are wider is 2 fold.
First, it gives back some road space to active travel users, and secondly, it acts as a traffic calming measure to slow down cars. Studies show this as an effect.
Since the 30kp/h rule is going to come in soon, its no harm.

Yea, lets just give back more road space to cars so drivers who cant really drive all that well feel better about themselves.
With your picture the the luas would be feasible where the trams originally were and still room for cyclists, cars, buses, trucks etc, Thanks for posting Jank backs up my point.

If we didn't have big stupid footpaths it'd be possible it's not about clearing cars.

I didn't make up shite, 2 of the 207's could pass each other by the maxol garage I saw it with my own two eyes.
So don't come at me with your arrogant tone looking down your nose at me as if you think you're better than me.

I absolutely agree why footpaths are bigger is to slow people down but Donnybrook Hill last time I checked wasn't on the list of 30kph so your argument is invalid pal.

I never said give more road space back to drivers, well done on trying to put words in my mouth.
You'd wanna be up earlier to catch me Jank.

Your bullshit arrogant approaches don't work with me

This is the precondition fallacy.

It goes like this.
We set down some arbitrary goals for what public transport looks like before we use it and we want it fixed or be perfect before we get out of our cars
But at the same time, we don't want to give up any road space or impede private car use anytime there are plans to improve Public Transport like creating Bus Lanes, because the same people engage in the same fallacy.

And so on it goes.

The NTA were in front of the transport committee the other week and they stated that the biggest reason behind Corks poor timetable and Ghost buses are, Buses that are stuck in Traffic with Private Cars, especially during rush hour.

If we actually implemented an Transport engineering led solution like Bus Connects, it would do wonders and then people would actually see the benefit of it. But instead councillors have stoked fear for electoral gain to have the status quo.

This is the main reason why PT in Cork is so poor. Many are just pig ignorant.
As it happens i agree with about bus connects and car usage but the NTA would want a kick in the hole if they said that.

It excuses them for their shitty service.

How much time is wasted at every stop while the shitty machine reads each leap card. Driver pushing buttons etc. Why is it not tap on tap off.

If people want to use cash let them buy a ticket at a bus stop.

Ghost buses isn't an issue with traffic. Its drivers not switching on their transponders because of union issues.

Why does the real time signs on the buses indicate timetabled buses if they are not pinging a transponder

Why if you happen to get a bus at shift change do you sit for 15 mins while the driver sets up and waits to clock on happens all the time. No indication prior.

Similar in the evening a driver will routinely tell the people getting on "I'm only going as far as the bus station" never a hint on the App or on the Real time sign

Why do the stop names on the screen on the bus (when it works) differ from those on the app or on google. Must be a nightmare for tourists.

Why why in the name of ever loving christ would you build a new bustop like on McCurtain Street and not install a real time sign no matter how shitty they are.

I don't expect you to answer any of these bit this shit is the proverbial low hanging fruit

100%. Great post.

The issue with ghost buses and very late buses is also brutal during off peak times. The traffic excuse only gets them so far. The majority of the time I use city buses is off peak and I don't even bother anymore. I try to get a lift, walk or taxi. Recently when one didn't show up, i walked in and got from Togher/Wilton right the way into town without one bus passing. I'm all in favour of better infrastructure for public transport, but the bus service has been a disgrace as long as I can remember.

I agree with you here. But the NTA seems to be moving in that direction.

Traffic is the main issue here, especially on long routes that cover one end of the city to another. When a bus is delayed that much, they are taken off the road and reset back to its original schedule, but it misses a chunk of their previous route, hence the Ghost bus phenomenon.

I've heard stories about the transponder issue and Unions, and this might have been a thing years ago, but afaik it's no longer an issue. And anyway, the physical bus would still turn up regardless.

Why does the real time signs on the buses indocate timetabled buses if they are not pinging a transponder
These times at the bus stop are not real-time though, afaik.
If you want real-time information use this website.

I think there is confusion out there that those signs offer real time info, but they don't. They just offer timetable information (GTFS) while bustimes.org offer GTFS-RT which is real-time info.
If the buses have transponders, then that is how the data is exported and injected to that site via an API.

Im not sure, but id hope that BusConnects updates those signs to reflect the leap in technology to track real time.

Look, I am not saying PT or the NTA are flawless, they arent and they need to do better.
But a lot of it is to do with the fact that PT is seen as poormans transport and rich folk just drive everywhere.

If we had a cultural shift that everyone, rich and poor gets the bus, dare I say a lot of what you mentioned would not be tolerated.

The Private car holds sway culturally in Ireland and until we as a nation decide that we must give over road space and resources to PT, a lot of what you mention will remain.

But there are plans and hopes that things will improve.
