Brian Crowley RIP

The death has taken place of former independent and Fianna Fáil MEP, Brian Crowley.

He was aged 61 and had been unwell for some time.

Mr Crowley died early this morning at Cork University Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment.

He was elected to the European Parliament five times and was one of the biggest vote getters in the country.

He topped the poll in each of the European elections he contested in 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014.

He fell out with Micheál Martin when he failed to secure the Fianna Fáil leader's support for the party's nomination to run for the presidency in 2011.

He retired from active politics in 2019.

A wheelchair user, he was paralysed from the waist down following an accident when he fell off a building at the age of 16.

His life was plagued by ongoing surgeries arising from complications from that accident, and he spent several years being treated in hospital.

He is survived by his mother, Sally, and by his brother and sisters.

It sounds like he had a fairly tragic life following that accident, I'm sure there wasn't a day where he didn't hold massive regrets.

I'm in two minds about his career, I think it's good a differently abled person should be an MEP,
but I don't think he was very effective for a very long time, and that maybe the people of Munster should have sent someone else,
particularly from 2009 onwards, when we most needed strong representation.

Really sad that he's survived by his mother, 61 is no age.

RIP

That’s a fair assessment. He shouldn’t have sought reelection in 2014.

I didn’t know him that well but from the couple of times I met him he came across as a happy go lucky guy.

Very protective of his vote!!
