What are now Hayfield Manor and Brookfield Medical Sciences Building we’re formerly estate houses. The latter home of the Jennings family of Jennings’s Cordial fame. Their cordial factory was where Paul Street Shopping Centre is now. The land around the house on College Road used to be known as “Jennings’s Wood,” due to the large numbers of fruit trees that grew there. There was also a large area devoted to blackcurrants and raspberries, for the cordials.

The original Jennings mansion which is now incorporated into Brookfield had a 5,000 gallon lead water tank in the attic because the original owner had a phobia about fire.
This made it very difficult to renovate the interior of the house when that construction work was being done. All the internal walls were built to support enormous weight.
