The big thing about the Bishop Casey case was that it was the major instigator in the sea-change of favour against the Church in Ireland

At the time it was seen in many circles almost out of order to question a member of the church

as we have seen lately with the latest report this was even more so back in the day



The Casey situation was a big turning point in Ireland IMO

also, and i'm all for guilty until proven innocent, don't forget their were plenty more allegations of abuse taken against him a few years ago for other incidents from the 1970's

Annie Murphy was a consenting adult, though somewhat vulnerable when they first met.
Casey and Mick Clery famously appeared on the Late Late Show condemning those who were in favour of abortion , yet it was something considered in the case of each of them .

Casey robbed the diocesan funds to pay for his lifestyle.

Without doubt, the child rapists protected by their bishops were an awful lot worse.

Casey and Clery were absolute hyprocites , though, and Casey was also a thief.

If circles of hell existed bishops who protect child rapists would be there with the rapists, what Casey and Clery did, lining their pockets by stealing money from people who need it, while despicable, is regular FF stuff.

The sheer arrogance of Casey is something else. A few years ago, he officiated at a funeral Mass in the Lough church - he came over from exile in the UK to do it. The subject of his sermon was about the immorality of giving bad example and scandal - even quoted the old "brimstone around his neck and drowned in the depths of the sea".

Odd sermon for a funeral. i though it was usually a brief chat about death and the person who died.
