Babyrat - The next big thing, and they're from Cork

She’s very charismatic and has a great presence for a newcomer.

Music is not quite my cup of tea but good on them, they seem polished enough for being so young.

those uber-frauds, babyrat, who are quite clearly worse than Hitler himself in the grand scheme of things, play cyprus avenue may 1st supporting Sprints

Neither of us will be at that show, Jim.

That's the half-eleven at night.

Another Irish band using money and a marketing company rather than talent to push themselves into public consciousness.

I've seen them live twice as a support act. They can't cut it on-stage.

caught them in Savoy a few weeks ago, and although I thought they were pretty good at times, it was hard to equate the hype to what I was watching on stage. More power to them, but I did wonder about a possible marketing machine element

gotta say I haven't seen any 'hype' about them, just a few folk here chatting

where's all this hype ye're seeing?

Ah yeah, I meant local hype more than hype hype. Not saying they’ve become globally massive or anything, just that a lot of people have been talking about them to me. That’s a kind of hype. They’ve released one track, they’re selling out gigs, and they’re getting big supports. Its been a quick trajectory. Like was said above, what I saw didn’t really match the raving reports people had been relaying to me.

You'll notice it more if you use Instagram, Jim.

IG is an app that I don't really want to deal with but I keep primarily for seeing gig listings from venues/bands that I engage with.

Every once in a while a band, who I don't follow, will appear in my stories feed completely unbidden. Usually these things will have glowing reviews for gigs/shows from unverified sources listed in tiny writing below the "review".

"YOU WILL NOT SEE A BETTER BAND THIS YEAR!"
- Journalist from blog that nobody reads.

This is the result of said band paying for social media presence.

A lot of bookers, agents, labels look at the amount of followers that a band has on social media now rather than listening to a demo.

They've sold out the Button Factory in Dublin now.

I think it's remarkable that they're doing so well despite not being on Spotify. Surely that's where everyone consumes their music now?

Pretty much where all their demographic would be consuming music, which makes it all the more surprising. The Button Factory is a big venue to sell out with no real release. I don't really care, or wouldn't begrudge them at all, and if word of mouth has done that - excellent, but I dunno if things happen that fast without a paid push, if it has, they're outliers. anyway, they're pretty decent and I'd 100% go see them again. i was expecting to be blown away and got just a little bit bored, which means fuck all, they're grand.
