Autism

My young fella was approved for a laptop to help him with school work, He found writing for long periods tiring and lost concentration,
Getting the laptop today,
My wife is working with one lad who has been approved, and has, a laptop, but is very resistant to using it. This is because he wants to be seen as the same as the mainstream lads, but she says that's ironic because the mainstream lads are looking enviously at him WITH his laptop (!), and would happily swop. The laptop would be far better for him (in terms of spellcheck etc) and it's a matter of slowly getting him used to it.

Our fella is very good at typing, When he was in primary school His SNA did a lot of typing practice with him, We have warned him the laptop is
for school work and not for youtube etc,

I'd advise you query whether the laptop now belongs to him or does the school consider it their property Jimmy.

Many parents speak to schools about the difficulties their asd children are having. For a day or two it's catered for but then lapses back into the norm again.
No two asd children will be carbon copies of each other, managing different difficulties must be a challenge for all involved. Some parents may prefer to home school their asd child if capable and I can see the benefits of that option.
Nobody understands the individual child better than the parent.
Certainly nobody fights harder, but sometimes in the rush to get the services their child requires, some parents don't want any difference to be seen and can get to the stage where that's more important than getting the services they need.

It's certainly a balance. My wife raves about some of her lads and their computer ability, one particular guy is an absolute whizz. Maybe it might be worth exploring the likes of coder dojo and see if his laptop interest would be channelled productively ?

Fine motor skills.
To concentrate to writing takes so much effort it hurts after a while. Strongly suggest using the Dictate function and the Thesaurus and Dictionary options in Word.

Speaking to a friend at the weekend whose youngfella has severe dyspraxia and dyslexia, so they started doing all of his homework as videos about 18 months ago. School were resistant at first but now he is making great progress with the subjects. The knock on is that he has become really good at editing and shooting from all of the practice, and is really determined about forging a career in something to do with film

Sad to report our 13 year old has stopped going to school the past two weeks, He did have a cold prior to that and was out two days,
Hence his routine is out, The school sent a family liason man to our house last week but to no avail, We are resigned to the fact he may not go back,
But he will be cut off completely socially, He hasnt left the house in over a week now,
I have told herself not to buy him anything for xmas. My attitude is he cant have it both ways, But herself says it would make matters ten times worse,

Very sorry to hear that Jimmy. It must be heartbreaking for you.
