Analytics in Football - Official Thread

Watched a bit of the European Super thing last night. Christ, there's a real Harlem Globetrotters feel to Real Madrid. Mightn't help that they only had one Spanish player on the pitch (Carvajal). I have less interest in this stuff by the year even if I acknowledge that the standard is way above the shite we used to get back in the 80s - with a few notable exceptions.

I love this. Such a range of players. Funny to see the likes of Yeboah & Waddle mixed in with the modern players 😆

Largely passes the sniff test with Henry, Salah & Suarez all in the sweet spot for elite creators & scorers.

Surprised to see Solsjkaer there tbh
Why? This would capture the supersub perfectly and it wouldn't be that surprising that he had an aggregate total of 3.5k minutes played.

Actually, the supersub thing is a bit of a myth. Only in 98/99 and 06/07 did he come on more times than he started in seasons where he played significant minutes.

I'm not too surprised to see him feature strongly from a goals-per-90 basis, given the supersub moniker.

But I'm surprised that he's marginally ahead of guys like Suarez, Son, Rooney, Firmino & Bernardo Silva in terms of frequency of assists.

The other thing might be is how fair is this?

A guy like Suarez or Henry might have spent the peak of their career or some of the peak of their careers in the EPL, so years when they're developing or on the wane wouldn't be included at all.

But sure Suarez only became world-class the moment he signed for Barca like ;)

I get your point and I suppose there are ways to try to factor that in (e.g. scale a players season output up or down based on a standard curve of how the output of midfielders/strikers tends to trend over time...or give greater weight to output during peak years).

But then you move away from it being a factual representation. And you might see some players in unusual (undeserved) positions - e.g. if a guy at the twilight of his career had a purple patch over the course of a season and a half.

The font size of the name also conveys how long they spent in the PL - so you can use that as a visual sense-check (e.g. for guys like Podolski)

It's not a perfect graphic (but few are) but it's a factual and interesting one imho

Case in point, Aguero looks far more productive than Shearer from what I can see (correct me if I'm wrong m8s, if there's a dyslexia for graphs, I have it).

I'd take prime Shearer over prime Aguero myself though.
