An extra bank holiday

I say instead of setting a day it occurs on, each year, the Bank Holiday should be drawn from all citizens of Ireland. One person gets picked from the entire citizenry and their birthday is declared the next year's bank holiday.

To add a bit of jeopardy to it if the birthday falls on Feb 29th in a non-leap year we don't get any extra bank holiday. (Yay, say the business owners.) However! If it falls on an already existing Bank Holiday we get a triple bank holiday. The normally scheduled bank holiday, the birthday bank holiday and a bonus bank holiday. Two day working week!

If the person the lottery picked for the next year's bank holiday dies between the lottery and their birthday all the pubs are closed, on that day, and everyone has to say a rosary on the day off. There'd be a little spice with the teetotalers and church trying to off them but the alkies and atheists trying to keep them alive.

But the teachers …

Macron & Co. will never get away with it but I understand where they are coming from.

I am considering moving there. Trying to get simple things done or over the line in France (especially in smaller towns) can be a nightmare.

If only the French had a word for bureaucracy.
