I fear you are giving people far too much credit.
As a wise man once said (agent K from Men in Black) "a person is smart but people are dumb", and that's not aimed at Americans specifically but people the world over.
I hope I am wrong but I can see Trump winning and winning easily and whether that makes me not very bright or not won't be determined until the election result.

Either way the biggest indictment of the American political system is that this is the choice the American people are being presented with.
