2025 Premier Senior Football Championship

Nemo V Newcestown

A game to forget for both really, in spite of the tight ending. Nemo started strongly and built an early lead with Newcestown unable to hold on to the ball. Mid way through the first half this flipped and Nemo couldn't get ball from Newcestown as they came all the way back and went 1 up, Nemo finally hit back to draw level at half.

Second half began as the first ended, Newcestown hogged possession and built a 7 pt lead. About half way through Nemo finally broke out and managed to hit 1-1 without reply to narrow it before the game settled again for another bit of time.

A second goal for Nemo levelled it (a call for square ball was made by Newcestown but the ref and umpires disagreed) Nemo kept committing errors though even being caught out and losing a promising posession by not having enough players back in their own half.

It was tit for tat to finish out, both sides could have hit a winner in injury time but circumstances didn't pan out for either.

In ET Nemo missed an early goal chance hitting the post but Newcestown ultimately took a lead into the half.

Nemos shooting in the second half of et was off and they missed 2 or 3 levelling chances but did eventually manage to land 2 shots and take a lead before Newcestown levelled again. Newcestown let themselves down with a few late wides while a nemo break through the middle produced the winning free.

Newcestown had one last chance to level it but we're off target.

Thoughts from the game: Martin missed 2 handy enough frees for Nemo, I wonder why Cronin didnt take the second. He was solid in goal though.

Both sides found defending the long possessions quite difficult at times and struggled to win possession for periods.

Nemos forwards were slow to shoot at times, the introduction of Dalton and Kerrigan gave abit more impetus to the attack.

Nemo were also somewhat sloppy for long periods too, giving up a scoring chance and conceding a score due to sending too many men forwards felt pivotal at one point in the second half.

Newscestown could have and arguably should have won this but just couldn't land the killing blow when they were on top

Standard of referring in cork GAA is woeful.
Agreed.
Two best teams won today just however it was deplorable refereeing.
Murnane not up to the standard. If Nemo lost he would have been escorted out of the grounds. It looked as if they were unhappy with his reffing regardless.
Regan on the other hand was only giddy to give the Barrs soft frees and Sherlock could have taken another 6 steps for the goal and he would have left him off. Ballincollig line were incensed at some of the frees he was giving against them.
Interesting final nonetheless.

What’s the definition of a soft free?
It could have been anyone reffing the first game and nemo would have been giving out, they looked like a team that were trying to find an excuse for playing poorly
