2025 Junior A Football Championship

In Mid Cork this weekend

Aghinagh won by 24
Donoghmore won by 23
Kilmichael won by 17

I think its time for a change.

The worst thing about it and ive seen it for years Eire Og Ballincollig loaded in round 1 or round 2 would beat most Junior teams in the County and by quarter final they are like a Junior B side.

Muskerry Round 1 Results
Eire Og 2-09
Naomh Aban 1-09

Very exciting game in Carrigadrohid on Friday night. Naomh Aban raced into an early lead but didn't put the game to bed which came back to bite them. If i remember correctly Naomh Aban went in at half time 6 points up but also missed a penalty. You can't take away from Eire Og tho as they fought very hard to get back into the game and run out eventual winners by 3 points. Naomh Aban will be kicking themselves as they had a serious chance of getting straight to a semi final but they shouldn't worry too much as they should almost certainly beat Ballingeary in the final game and give themselves are serious chance of reaching a quarter final.

Ballincollig 0-15
Clondrohid 0-15

Another very exciting game on Friday evening, and it's a pity these 2 games clashed as i would've loved to have seen this one too. Clondrohid came into this knowing a win would put them through, but for Ballincollig this was a must win game to stay in contention and from what i heard you could see this from their performance. A draw a fair result on the day. Things are hotting up nicely in this group and Clondrohid vs Grenagh in the final game could be a cracker. Dripsey will be no push over for Ballincollig as they will need a win too to avoid relegation. Dripsey beat Ballincollig 2 years ago too so the Dripsey lads will be well up for this.

Ballingeary 1-13
Kilmichael 5-18

Kilmichael hammered a shocking Ballingeary side. I expected a reaction from Kilmichael after their poor display in round 1 and that's exactly what we got, albeit against a struggling Ballingeary side. This win puts Kilmichael back in contention to make it out this group although it won't be easy as they will need a win over Eire Og in the final game. I wouldn't write Kilmichael off tho as they seem to ramp things up when they are the underdogs like we saw last year when they beat Aghinagh. On the other hand, Ballingeary are struggling massively and could be looking at a relegation especially with their current score difference.

Grenagh 1-18
Dripsey 2-04

Grenagh beat Dripsey in what was my second time seeing both teams play in this Championship. This game went exactly how i expected with Dripsey being well in the game at half time but Grenagh just to pull away coming down the stretch. I must say tho i've been impressed with Dripsey and they have defenitely gotten better in the last 2 years. They are very well set up and they dont make it easy for any team to play through them. They are just missing that cutting edge going forward and its showing in the scores they are putting up. Grenagh on the other hand are going very well and will have a lot to say in the remainder of this championship.

Aghinagh 7-13
Kilmurry 0-10

Aghinagh unfortunately gave Kilmurry an absolute hammering in what is a very poor showing for the divison. Fortunately for Kilmurry they got a win under their belt in round 1 which keeps them safe from any relegation talk. Aghinagh on the other hand showed no mercy at all and were going for the throat at every opportunity. Aghinagh are looking good and a semi final is almost guaranteed as you would imagine Ballinora could be in the for the same result in the last game....

Donoughmore 1-25
Ballinora 0-05

Another hammering this week with Ballinora on the receiving end of this one. Donoughmore needed to get points on the board after their loss to Aghinagh and they did so rather convincingly. Unfortunately for Ballinora it's looking like a relegation battle for them. They would be my favourites to go down at this stage if there's to be a relegation. Donoughmore wil beat Kilmurry handy in the final game you would imagine, so they will be eyeing up a quarter final and making sure all there players will be back for this.

It was two years ago we beat ballincollig , Last year they beat us by 6. Dripsey beat blarney last year and then they decided to give walkovers to Ballincollig and Donoughmore.

Blarney should have been banned from all junior grades for 12 months imho. What they did was a disgrace. Going down to win a handy junior B is zero punishment to a crowd who don't give a toss about football.

Dead right, i was shocked there wasn't more done about that. Giving 2 teams walkovers in the championship benefits no one.

There was zero need to give walkovers. If their senior hurlers wanted to give the games a miss, grand....at least field a team and don't make a total mockery of it.
I think they were hoping to beat dripsey in the first game and be safe from relegation and when that didnt happen they knew they would be in the relegation final and didnt want an extra game to harm the hurlers

Including 2nd teams in a new structure makes sense, it's survival of the fittest, separating them out benefits nobody. 2nd teams havent been bounding up the league and championships bar a few exceptions. A County Wide Junior A1 with 16 teams and an A2 with 16 teams would make a lot of sense. Same for the B, currently 12 in that change to B1 with 16 and B2 with 16, same for C. Overall you'll see a raise in standard and competitive games for all. Base placement on ranking points for the previous three seasons
Definitely would make sense and increase the level of competition drastically. Would make for an amazing junior a county championship, smaller rural clubs looking to get back up with the best.
Would massively hurt bigger clubs trying to push up the levels though on the other hand. Lads would lose interest fairly quickly when playing with the second team and only playing other second teams with not much incentive. A lot of these lads would be pushing for places on first teams and really pushing the “starters” on in training also.
Would be great for a better spectacle but the concept would need a great structure and cater for both sides of the argument.
The addition of more grades throughout the years has also had a big impact on the divisional championships.

Avondhu Round 2 Results
Ballyclough 1-15 Deel Rovers 1-9
Mallow 1-14 Killavullen 2-8
Kilshannig 2-18 Ballyhooly 0-11

Some big games in round 3 as lc gaels v Ballyhooly will decide who goes through. Kilshannig are already through in that group. Killavullen need to win by a few against Charleville to go through on point difference. Clyda and Ballyclough are both through already but will battle it out for top spot in the group.

I think the problem people had at the time was that Blarney have 3 adult hurling teams. Probably about 50-60 or maybe more adult players I assume. If you want to pull the senior hurlers (20-25 players) I don’t think most people would have been too put out as most of them don’t play football anyway, but after losing the first game they conceded 2 walkovers 5/6 weeks out, when they have player numbers to at least tog out and protect integrity of the competition and were then essentially rewarded with dropping down to junior b this again year (which they probably have a strong chance in winning you’d assume). It just wasn’t a good look for them I thought …

Anyway on the rest of rest of Muskerry games, above there is an obvious gap between to bottom now and these huge winning margins are unavoidable in the current structure.
