2024 Senior A Hurling Championship

Well put. I can also recall from Cusacks book that he said that Cloyne Team of mid 2000s had 13 of the Starting 15 from three families, unintentionally he's identifying the problem that as good as they may be there relying on a tiny pool of players.
Would Sully take the job on?

I don't think they have the numbers there either to be honest
From my understanding, they were an intermediate club before a golden generation came along between the Sullivans and Cusacks as well as others which led them to the 3 county finals. They kept competitive through the addition of a few others such as Paudie Sull but the well has truly ran dry now for them

Cloyne, like most clubs in East Cork outside of Midleton, have historically fluctuated between intermediate and junior grades.

Cloyne produced good players but didn't have the population to use them. Difference now is that there is a massive young population in Cloyne but they still have poor numbers coming through and they don't produce good quality players.

On the other hand, Russel Rovers are probably having the best period in the club's history.

The underage amalgamation has been disaster for Cloyne. They joined up over a decade ago and there has been almost nothing coming through for Cloyne since.

When St. Colman's were founded there was an assumption that they would be competing in Premier 1. Instead they have won very little over the past decade and most of their teams are playing in the third or fourth tier.

The population and tradition is there for Cloyne to be doing well but they are almost at a stage where they have to start again. Fact is that there is very little coming through and won't be for the next decade.

I remember in Donal Ogs book he went on and on about Kevin Hartnett Russle Rovers being with a poor Junior A side and if he was with one of the big guns like Cloyne at the time would of been a main part of the Cork setup that time. Which maybe is true.

Quiet interesting that now Russle Rovers are going in one direction and Cloyne the other.

Did they both not go the same direction over the weekend ? Which was out of the championship.

In fairness they’ve won 2/3 minor premier 2 county championships as well as a few premier 2 championships at u16 level.

Premier Jr is the 5th tier of Cork hurling. Old Jr B was 4th tier and then 5th tier when premier intermediate was introduced in the noughties.

No comparison in standard in the grades with the old system apart from premier Senior. Their was 30+ teams playing intermediate at one stage which was ridiculous when you think about it as it completely diluted the standard.

People are giving out about Bishopstown bringing the standard down in 1 group now, before we had 6 or 7 teams like that throughout the championship. It's great how cut throat it's become.

But I think if you had told both clubs ten years ago that would be the height of success it would have been considered a failure.

Fact is, Cloyne only have 7 or 8 players who will be eligible to play for their seniors on every underage team. Which would be grand if they were playing at a higher level than they were before the amalgamation but, generally, they aren't. Cloyne are producing less players and still playing at a similar level to ten years ago.

I'd argue that Killeagh, Carrigtwohill, Aghada, Fr. O'Neills have all had much stronger underage setups than St. Colman's over the past ten years.
