2024 Senior A Football Championship

Looking like Kanturk & Knocknagree will make the 2 semi final spots, could be an all Duhallow final...repeat of the 2020 premier intermediate final which Knocknagree won...Straight to a semi will suit Kanturk with their Dual commitments...it would be some going to be premier senior in both codes....

What are any of the big towns in Cork doing in football?
Youghal, Midleton, Cobh, Passage-West, Carrigaline, Kinsale, Bandon, Clon, Skibbereen, Bantry, Macroom, Mitchelstown, Fermoy, Mallow.

14 of the biggest towns there producing 1 player starting for Cork.
The fellas running Cork GAA are asleep at the wheel.
It's complicated.

The bigger the urban area, the less likely the GAA club is to be the focal point of the community and more going on with other sports.

Many towns just don't have the strongest tradition of competing at senior level - Cobh, Kinsale, Youghal, and a few others would fall right into that category.

Some towns, while market towns serving a wider area, don't actually have a population any bigger than many rural parishes.

Some are suburbs that have grown massively in recent decades and it's reasonable that the local club will need to adjust to deal with that.

What's a shame is town clubs with a strong history and tradition, likes of Macroom, Bantry and Skibb, struggling.

I'd agree though, Cork GAA should be much more proactive on the socio demographics of the County and where we need to attention and focus.

Mallow is one of the biggest towns in Cork. Around 12,500 people according to latest CSO figures. But ask any Mallow GAA person, and they would always consider themselves a relatively small club. Even though they have a spectacular complex, the complex is 2 miles outside the town and they would be considered to be like a close knit country GAA club. But their footballers have been extremely competitive at Premier Senior grade which is great. Their junior A footballers had a big win v Ballyhooly in championship too last weekend. Their hurlers are struggling down at Premier Intermediate though.

Mitchelstown would be a much smaller town with around 4000 people. Stuck in Intermediate A for over 10 years after losing 4 finals. They never really pushed on with all of their talent.

Fermoy. A town with a population of about 5500, seem to be in a slight decline too after a very successful decade, winning an Intermediate and Premier Intermediate football county and winning Junior and Intermediate hurling counties.

Charleville were always a town ridiculed for being the minnows to their more successful neighbouring clubs but they've had a tremendous climb in hurling from Junior to Premier senior. Their footballers won a Junior B County and have since won 2 or 3 North Cork Junior A titles.

Kanturk have been the most impressive of the North Cork towns. They have provided us with 6 or 7 representatives on Cork senior panels over the last 10 years or so. Their rise from junior grades to Premier Senior in hurling and Senior A in football has been admirable.

Around my neck of the woods, the town teams have been going well. It is the country clubs who are all struggling and a good chunk of clubs are in a concerning decline. They only country clubs who seem to be healthy are Kilshannig and maybe Killavullen and LC Gaels. Kildorrery and Glanworth are holding their own but in a slower decline than other clubs.

Predict Kanturk and Knocknagree to get two semi final spots. Carrigaline v Bishopstown and Cill Na Martra v Dohenys in quarters with winners of first game playing Kanturk. Really open competition if it pans out this way. Most of these teams would have ambitions of winning it out. Dont understand why 1st seeds likely plays 3rd in semis. 2nd seed gets an easier run of it?

Ballingeary V Kiskeam (Kiskeam)
Carrigaline V Cill Na Martra (Draw)
Dohenys V Skibb (Dohenys)
Kanturk V Fermoy (Kanturk)
Knocknagree V Bishopstown (Bishopstown)
Newmarket V Clyda (Newmarket)
