2024 Premier Junior Football Championship

Cork need to seriously look at the structure of the championships.
It should probably be Aghabullogue going out there today in the junior and Knocknagree in the intermediate.
I know the priority for clubs is the win a county first and foremost, Munster is a bonus. But Kerry are completely playing the system, Munster council should be putting pressure on them to have more clubs in their senior & intermediate championship. The junior & intermediate championships are at this stage just a platform to allow Kerry club players at the lower grades get a day out in Croke Park.

Kerry are supposed to be the home of football yet they tell us they only have 9 teams capable of playing in their senior club championship?
Surely they should have 16 teams playing in that championship?

It’s not a Kerry problem.,GAA recommend 12 at each grade.. it’s just a Cork problem.. a legacy issue from the massive restructuring of our championships. The clubs all supported that because of the clever naming which meant no one “got relegated” even though 70 clubs went from the 3rd grade to the 6th grade. 😂
It’s our premier intermediate champs should be playing this comp.. not too many of our junior champs have won it I think

Ballymacelliott 3-12 Buttevant 0-8 FT

Ballymac were the superior team here. 18 year old Jack Joy was excellent for them and a player to watch out for.

Saying that, Buttevant really underperformed. They scored two 2-pointers to go up 0-4 to 0-0 after 3 minutes and then sat back, slowed the tempo down and let Ballymac get a foothold on the game thereafter. Buttevant should have taken advantage of the wind in the first half, get a lead and then retreat.

But look, at the same time, Ballymac are the 3rd grade champions in Kerry while Buttevant are the 5th grade champions in Cork so it is hard to be too harsh on them. They had a good year and will be well able for Intermediate A next year.

Someone tell the Kilbrittain lads we shouldn't have allowed them to win the Munster Junior, we must send our Prem Inter champs as that's our 3rd grade :D
Happens every year on here, Kilmurry won Munster last year, whilst Cork hurling clubs have won the last 7 in Junior hurling or something.

We shouldn’t go changing our system because Kerry clubs are getting more success, Buttevant would beat the majority of other junior sides around the country as is.

The main thing is that the championships within Cork are now more competitive, which I think is clear.

The solution is simple, no need to change structure. Just rename grades as what they actually are , Senior A is Prem Intermediate and will always be despite the name. Follow on down the grades then.
Galway have got rid of this Senior A grade for next year afaik

The numbers of clubs in grades between Cork and Kerry comes up this time every year. Two points on that:
  • Cork have a much larger population, a much larger number of club footballers, and a much greater number of football clubs. If you count the percentage of clubs in a grade, Kerry do not have the grading advantage so often stated.
  • In any case, if the numbers of clubs in championship grades were the reason that Kerry clubs beat Cork clubs in football, then by the same logic Waterford football clubs would be beating Cork club football teams and Kerry club hurling teams would be beating Cork club hurling teams.
The actual reason that Kerry clubs tend to beat Cork clubs in football is that Kerry footballers tend to be better footballers. If we want that to change, that is the change we should focus on.

Now, there is a case to be made that overall the grades in any one county should be promoted or relegated in respect of the Munster championship. E.g. if a Kerry club in a Kerry grade wins the Munster one year then the team that wins the same grade in Kerry the next year should at that time compete in the next higher grade in Munster. I think though that this would be extremely difficult to gain agreement on.

A better post than mine.

Agreed. Our grades and structures are perfect, just to rename the grades. Senior A's nane should be changed to Premier Intermediate, Premier Intermediate to Intermediate A, Intermediate A to Premier Junior and Premier Junior to Premier 2 Junior.
