Cork Footballers

gave there all much like the Kerry game ...neaver looked like conceding a goal in both the Kerry and Dublin games ..we are on the right road management look like they know what they are doing we have talent coming along ...a big number of young players got a championship match under there belts in Croke Park ...we have loads to work on div 2 is going to very competitive next season but we have challenge for promotion not be fighting relegation ...i believe we will ...best of luck to all the panel of players now in the County Championships i am sure we will see more talent there ..

Thank you to all the players and management team, very difficult year for them but they will have come away from Croker a little disappointed, which is a good sign for next year.

Will be very interesting to see what physical condition the panel is in when the league starts next year, one major change will be the off season work needed to get to the next level

We need...

A keeper with confidence and competent off both feet, hard to know whether the outfield players drop in energy causes Martin to go longer often but once he did we lost any semblance of control we had over what was happening

A sweeper, if required, other than Powter, we can't expect him to run 60/70 yards in each possession to get us going forward with purpose

A centre back with physical presence and natural defensive qualities to read play or mark/shut down a player, can't think of anyone, maybe O'Mahony, or move Shanley out there if O'Mahony steps up

Two midfielders, one to go with Maguire and one to replace him when he has his work done, O'Callaghan doesn't get involved in the game enough for me, wouldn't mind seeing him at half back tbh

A centre forward - McSweeney showed glimpses of what we need, always trying to be available, good kick passer, good shooter, if he attacks the physical work now he might do.

I'm glad this season is over, primarily for the added pressure the players have been under since it started, can't have been easy, they dug in and got a bit of luck they deserved in the draws, came away today with a clear picture of where they need to go if they want to be really competitive, I am very positive about our future once our outrageous run of injuries subsides.

2023

M White (need him back, specialist position)

K O'Donovan
D O'Mahony
M Shanley

L O'Donovan
C O'Callaghan (my outside bet)
S Meehan

I Maguire
K O'Hanlon/R Maguire/B Hartnett

E McSweeney
S Powter
D O'Connell

C O'Mahony
B Hayes
C Corbett

The names not on this list are serious, let's get 30/35 fellas in that want to be there and go for it hard, we are not as far away as we think once we apply ourselves correctly in the areas that need attention

Plenty of positives to take from cork from this year, chief amongst them going two big games against two of the major contenders and not conceding a goal or even much of a sniff of one.

A very honourable effort from where we were around St Patricks Day.

There’s a nucleus there to build from and in spite of what the cheerleaders would have you believe there is no great team in football today. You look at crowds like Dublin, Kerry, Mayo, Donegal, Tyrone as being a bit ahead and that’s the truth of the matter but look if the truth be told those counties would be doing well to keep it kicked out to their own best teams of the last 10-15 years. Part of the problem we have in both codes is winning is simply not important enough in Cork. If it was it might dawn on people that we’re not far away, and arguably at a push closer than we are on the other side of the aisle at the moment.

Cork need a bit of certainty at the helm, the likes of Corbett, O’Donovan and Meehan to stay healthy, Keane to commit and they’ll go far next year. It’s a pity that one of the promotion spots next year is nailed on for Dublin but 4 or 5 wins in the league shouldn’t be an unrealistic target.

Sincere thanks to players and backroom.

Disappointing overall . We needed to have a cut at this . Our full forward line are a serious out fit we kicked no ball in to them . We were overly defensive in my opinion
We played the match like we wanted to keep the score down .
Look next year perhaps things will improve please god they will.

Anyway come on mayo

Cathail O Mahony needs to be the free taker going forward. Hopefully fitness/injuries improve next year.
Highly debatable. Sherlock has been unerring this year before missing a few long range ones today from the ground. Generally speaking he doesn’t miss a thing.

O’Mahony can kick them too and that’s a helpful thing to have. No team should be reliant on one. Dublin arguably carry Dean Rock for them.

Next winter is important for conditioning further. These are still young men developing. There’s work to be done on their bodies that won’t even be complete in one year.

We also need to evolve further in our tactical setup. I’d like to see White rejoin the panel. He has a good range from short to very long but he can also be used as a +1 with the ball and possibly to even push opposition kickout in a high zone. Our own kickout and how we defend the opposition kickout are a big part of our shortcomings. We need to be far more thoughtful to compensate for other shortcomings like conditioning.
