Niall Cussen has been involved in planning in the public sector for 30 years - working for local authorities, An Bord Pleanala, Before this gig, he was a senior department official and a key figure in introducing the current density guidelines.

He has very fixed ideas and is intent on exercising a very high level of control over local authorities.

These density levels don't work as they require a large percentage of apartments in areas where they can't be built.

OPR is required and will be effective when it's got a CEO with a reasonable, balanced approach.

Cussen is the wrong man for the job and will continue his heavy handed, controversial approach. There is only one solution to this mess.

IMHO this should not be built so close to the city. Get the Cork to Limerick motorway built and then build this and an IKEA in Charleville or closest Mallow.

Retail in the city centre is not doing particularly well and the last thing it needs is this on its doorstep. Joint up thinking and proper planning would say this should not happen but now it's a power struggle between CCC, CC and government.

No need to Dan. Barry is complaining about densities, Cussen does not set the densities or any other planning guidance - they are there too oversee that councils are interpreting and applying the guidance correctly. If you wanted the guidance on densities changed then he is not the guy you would go to

Why let what was actually written get in the way of your point.

What relevance has that in terms of the job he is now carrying out?

Of course he has a career in planning that will cross with what he is doing now - the fact that he has qualifies him for the job! Having a background in ABP is ideal also for what he is doing now as they take a different approach to the same thing as they are not bound to precedent. His job is to make sure the councils implement planning guidance, is that not what he is doing?
