An open mic session in February 2002 in the "Douglas Hyde" in Cork set the PlaytOh spark alight, starting off with this impromptu trio (Niall, Magz and Cormac). The punters were impressed as was Tadhg the owner who invited the trio back. This was followed by a number of support slots to local acts in Cork and the inspiration for a wealth of new material.
A few vital elements were still missing, a place to practise and a drummer – Jonathon O'Keefe entered the stage and the sealed the deal – PlaytOh was born. Niall heard on the grapevine that there was a guy that played the bass guitar who wanted to be in a band. The guys met up and it turned out that they knew each other from years back. A couple of practices later and Cormac "Wally" O Callannain was hired!
The official formation date is historically linked to Monday 11th of March 2002. A four track debut CD was recorded in April/May 2002, an instrumental step in PlaytOh's victory in Red
FM's Battle of the Bands. This triumph in the face of stiff competition proved that the public liked this innovative blend of Pop-Rock with a traditional flavour and that the public wanted to hear more from these 'soon to be' famous five.
Open Mic sessions lead to the initial line-up of the band. Winning Battle of Bands on RedFM by a landslide victory! Meeting Jackie Hayden and getting some straight-talking feedback on how music should not sound. First 'speed wobble' but the advice was good – all songs revised!
