Blackwater Valley Makers fledgling exhibition for 2020 has been awarded to visual artist Rosalind Spencer from Watergrasshill. Graduating from the Crawford College of Art & Design in 2019 with a BA Honours degree in Fine Art she was selected to participate in the 2019 RDS Visual Art Awards Exhibition in Dublin, and also awarded the CIT Environmental Exhibition Award for her degree show. Roz is currently undertaking a 12 month graduate studio residency awarded by Sample Studios. This is her first solo exhibition.

Through her work Rosalind is interested in confronting anthropocentric activity, with a focus on our complex relationship with animals. Working primarily in sculpture the artist contrasts salvaged metal and welded mild steel with organic materials to explore ways that demonstrate and convey human detachment from animals. Reoccurring themes within her work address speciesism, objectification, manipulation, trauma and empathy. The exhibition Narcissus aims to act as a dysfunctional mirror in the frustrating attempt of trying to see ourselves.

Narcissus opens on Wednesday 5th August.
