Cork Educate Together National School is pleased to announce their fundraising event “Exploring the Titanic” on Friday, October 18 at 7.30 p.m. at UCC, in Boole 4.
Our distinguished guest speaker is Paul Henri Nargeolet, the world’s leading expert on the Titanic wreck site. Formerly a French Navy commander, he is Director of the Underwater Research Program for RMS Titanic Inc. He has led six expeditions to the Titanic wreck site, and his latest visit to the site took place 2019 as part of the Five Deep project. Since the first expedition, more than 5,000 artefacts have been recovered from the Titanic, which sank in 1912.
Nargeolet will be speaking about the evolution of underwater exploration at the Titanic wreck site – and the current goal to treat the wreck as an archeological site, a first for a wreck at two and a half miles below the surface. His talk will describe the exciting changes in technology that have enabled Titanic explorers in 2010 to conserve the memory of this legendary ship in high definition 3-D.
Nargeolet has opened Titanic exhibits
all over the world. Cities include Paris, Amsterdam, Bangkok, New York, Geneva, Quebec, Brussels, Orlando, Las Vegas and many more in the US. More than 25 million people have visited these exhibits worldwide. Nargeolet is widely considered to be the world's leading authority on the Titanic wreck site. He has been interviewed for countless documentaries for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, History Channel, NBC network news and European news. In 2014, he provided analysis on CNN regarding the search for Malaysian Air flight 370, and in 2010, he led the search to find the black boxes for the doomed Air France flight 447. “I’m delighted to help my grandson’s school,” said Mr. Nargeolet “and the Titanic story is part of Irish history”.
Proceeds of the fundraiser will be used for a much needed site development. The ‘temporary’ portacabins dedicated to support classes are soon to be condemned and removed from the school yard. As a result, the School urgently requires funding to produce a permanent solution, which is to extend the building to a second storey above the hall. This will not only allow the school to create a permanent space to display academic and creative accomplishments, but it will also expand the space available for children to play in the yard.
With a local contribution target of €10,000, our objective is to offer the pupils a permanent environment that fosters their talents and boosts their physical activities.
