On Oct 31st each year in Shandon, people take to the streets to join the Dragon as it travels from one world to the other accompanied by creatures from the underworld. The Dragon of Shandon Halloween Lantern Parade has grown in five years to include a wide range of youth groups, community and arts groups, volunteers and participants.

The Centrepiece is the Dragon, a 36ft creature made entirley from tape and manned by a 12 person team. In addition to this, expect to see giant skeletons, ghostly lanterns, creepy cats and scary masks to ensure that this is the night when the ghouls come out to play!

See here for footage of last year's parade
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWfS9NlDQ8c

We are still looking for volunteers to help out in preparation for the parade, and/or on the night itself. Interested volunteers do not need to be artistic and we offer workshops for volunteers to pick up new skills along the way. Learn how to make props, animate puppets, facepaint, make masks. Learn to drum, take drama classes or find out about costume design.

Workshops currently take place:
Mon 2-5
Tue 2-5
Wed 2-5 and 7-9

Anyone interested can call into us on 107 Shandon St., or else contact ccartlink@gmail.com or 021-4212914 for more details.

The September issue of 'The Mutation' is out now so check it out at http://themutation.com
The mutation arts and culture ezine is produced by mutantspace.ie arts resource and publishes a range of articles and essays on everything from music to poetry, audio stories to performance art, food to literature, and travelogues to reviews
This month we have a video lecture by Linguist Daniel Everett, books on maps of the imagination, aesthetics and the Dematerialization of the Art Object, an exclusive interview with the Saw Doctors, an interview with a member of a Spanish social centre, short stories, new poetry, recipes, album reviews and much, much more
Our ezine is the voice of mutant space, an online arts co-operative, based in Ireland, that freely supports its members in the development and production of independent arts projects and events. We view this ezine as an ongoing collective project, a vehicle that enables our members to show their work and write on subjects that interest, amuse and irritate them.
As well as running this project we also manage a resource bank, scrap store, forum, host our own projects, help members promote their own events, produce our own events and encourage and develop new working relationships with our members.
So, if you want to get involved, help out, become a feature columnist, submit an essay, video, sound piece or if you have an idea for something completely different to put into this blog go to www.mutantspace.ie and join up – it’s free

Mutantspace.ie is kicking off its fourth Mutant Shorts competition. All entrants will be screened on Friday 5th November from 7.30 – 9.30pm @ the Savoy, Cork as part The second Trash Culture Revue which will be running from 4th - 6th November.
This is the third competition in our ongoing film series called ‘Mutant Rooms’. So far we’ve been in the Kitchen and the Sitting room.
It is our intention to develop this series over the next few years and in doing so create a unique collection of films based in different rooms, by different people, in different genres

BRIEF:

MUTANT ROOMS: HALLWAYS

• All films must be located in, around and related to a hallway
• All films must be under 10 minutes
• All entries need to be registered before 5pm on Friday 15th October
• Deadline for having your film included is Friday 29th October

Please note that ‘a hallway’ could be inside, outside, on earth in space, anywhere. The film can be told from any point of view. The possibilities are endless despite the limitations. Whatever happens in that space, that hallway, is up to the filmmaker

All films must be in DVD format and delivered to:
Goldiefish Events | YMCA building | 11 - 12 Marlboro Street | Cork | Ireland

NOTE:
1. All entries need to be registered before 5pm on Friday 15th October
2. All participants have to provide their own equipment
3. Deadline for having your film included in the screenings is Friday 29th October

You can download a form here and for more info go to our ezine

*WASHINGTON’S KEEGAN THEATRE RETURN WITH “FOOL FOR LOVE”*

Washington D.C.’s Keegan Theatre...

WASHINGTON’S KEEGAN THEATRE RETURN WITH “FOOL FOR LOVE”

Washington D.C.’s Keegan Theatre Company are back at the Everyman Palace Theatre, Cork with Sam Shepard’s “Fool For Love”, opening on August 30th, before going on an extensive Irish Tour.

A critical and popular success, “Fool For Love” is a masterfully constructed work which brings searing intensity and rare theatrical excitement to its probing, yet sharply humorous, study of love, hate and the dying myths of the Old West. This is a true American Classic.

In a stark, low-rent motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert, Eddie and May love and hate their way through life. Unable to hold on, or let go, they battle to keep from drowning together. Join us for this Pulitzer Prize winning playwright's masterpiece, that shows the heights and depths that love can take us to, and make fools of us all.

Directed by Colin Smith, “Fool For Love” features Kevin Adams, Larissa Gallagher, Mark A. Rhea and K. J. Thorarinsson. Eddie is played by Mark A Rhea, the founder and producing artistic director of The Keegan Theatre where his acting credits include “Of Mice and Men”, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, and “Glengarry Glen Ross”. Each of these Keegan productions toured to the Everyman Palace in the past as the company has a long-standing relationship with the Everyman and Ireland.

Larissa Gallagher (May) - graduated from the W.A. Academy of Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Musical Theatre). Acting credits include: “Hair”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Assassins”. She is also a qualified Voice and Drama teacher, and a full-time Voice Over Artist.

Kevin Adams (Old Man) is a Keegan company member, where his acting credits include “Dancing at Lughnasa”, “Of Mice and Men” and “The Playboy of the Western World”.

K J Thorarinsson’s (Martin) Keegan credits include “Of Mice and Men” “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (US/Ireland) and “1776”.

Sam Shepard’s “Fool For Love” opens at the Everyman Palace Theatre on Monday August 30th and runs until Saturday September 4th. Tickets, €25 / €20 conc., opening night €15 and €7 student ticket (Mon-Wed) applies. Booking is on 021 450 1673 or www.everymanpalace.com

Following its Cork run, “Fool For Love” tours to St John's Theatre & Arts Centre (Listowel), 6 September; Garage Theatre (Monaghan), 8 September; Watergate Theatre (Kilkenny), 9, 10, 11 September; An Grianan Theatre (Letterkenny), 16 September; Town Hall Theatre (Galway), 20, 21, 22 September and Source Arts Centre (Thurles), 24 September.

“Sam Shepard's purest and most beautiful play." - NY Daily News.
"a powerful addition to Shepard's impressive output." - Variety.
“Keegan Theatre's Fool for Love is a pure celebration of playwright Sam Shepard's bumptious theatricality” - Washington Post
