Default Malaysia

Idea's needed. Heading there for 2 weeks/17 days in July. I'm coming in from NZ, mate is comin in from UK. All we have really is flights to KL. Absolutely no interest in staying in KL given we'll have so little time. What i'm looking for really is a Ko Tao/ Pha Nang type effort. Short commuter flight from KL, or train journey out of the city at most as not really interested in spending too long venturing way off the beaten track, relaxed atmosphere, not too developed, not too seedy, good nightlife, etc. Anyone that's been to thailand and malaysia might be able to give me a good comparison....

Not going to thailand because i've been there. Travel goal is to always have been to more countries than my age.

Any help?

consider checking out philippines, im there in 2 weeks. use air asia and tiger airways to travel in SEA. ryan air equivalents. boracay in philippines is supposed to be v good spot, my buddy just spent a few weeks there and raved about the place. they speak english and the fact that they are not buddhist/ muslim makes a difference.
