Eamo was as tactful as ever tonight calling him a nothing player. Obviously well over the top but he's definitely a limited player. The way United are set up leaves him vulnerable against the better players in the world. Scholes is too attacking and Fletcher just isn't good enough to do the donkey work for Carrick to find space and pick his passes. United really need to pick up Hargreaves (or somebody similarly energetic) in January if they can.
I'll admit that Spurs are missing him to an extent but the transfer fee was crazy and they were dead right to accept it.
His lack of pace and leadership will always be a handicap. Those are things that can't be coached. If you lack these two qualities then your passing has to be out of this world and it has to be done at the highest level of the game to reach United's expectations.
I'm not writing him off at all and certainly not making rash judgements based on one CL game but what I am saying is that he has limitations (which will be particularly apparent against sides much better than Celtic) that will be difficult to overcome while fitting into the way United play.

Agreed on that but both himself and Scholes as a central midfield partnership is not the answer. If he gets someone who can play in a deeper position in the middle with him then he can do exactly what he bought to do.

Exactly. The pressure the kid is under must be savage. United got the win in a game they probably would have drawn last season. For a guy who was getting his first taste of champions league he did fine. I dont know how fit Alan Smith is at the moment but when he returns it will be a huge bonus to united.
