Focusrite are grand like, not to be sniffed at. They were very classy a few years ago (the red series), but they're a totally different company now (from the blue series on). Any Mackie pre would beat the M-Box. If memory serves, the M-Box has an "instrument" input which is makes a great DI.
Paulie, if your guitar does not have a preamp in it, buy a good active DI box with an input impedance of 1 Megohm or more. The LA Audio ones are going cheap in a few places at the moment, they're fantastic. You will be amazed at the improvement in your guitar tone. Stay away from Behringer- they sound pretty good but last about 6 months.

preamp in my guitar?? what the?... I use a gibson sg standard, no in-built preamp...
although I assume you're talking about my audio interface... I use an edirol UA-25 which has in-built preamps... it still sounds shit when the guitar goes in directly...

I'll check out the LA audio ones... thanks
No, I meant the guitar alright. The difference is important when it comes to choosing a DI. Active guitars (i.e. with a preamp in them) tend to sound pretty crap with a good valve amp, which is why your Gibson does it the good old fashioned way. Passive pickups interact with the amps input in a musically pleasing way. Active ones are very bossy, so the old amp will sulk and not do its job properly.
The rule of thumb with DI is- active DI for passive pickups and passive DI for active pickups. Keyboards- do not use a DI, use a 1:1 transformer. But often you can alter the tone in a nice way by not following that rule. Interestingly, I've never seen a PA that included 1:1 transformers, so the keyboards often sound a bit wolly.
