Default Mobile Phone unlocking.......

I just heard that when switching networks Meteor will unlock your phone for you if it needs it, can anyone verify this??

If they don't isn't there some way of unlocking a phone yourself using IMEI numbers and such. If anyone knows could ye help me out?

Thanks.
