Default Nicknames for the Gardaí - How did they come about?

Such as;

The Shades

Why are they called The Shades? What's the connection?

Been around for years.

Apparently they are called "shades" because "they're always lamping ya, boiy..."

Nope.

Actually asked a Garda this once and he told me that it is an old traveler nickname that came about when it was regulation for them to wear their hats very low on their faces , so much so that it cast a 'shade' over their faces.

English Police got the nickname 'Bobbies' from Robert 'Bob' Peel who founded the police force . Peelers is another nickname for them .

Coppers is believed to come from when their badges were made of copper but it is also believed it is actually older than that with it coming from the old anglo saxon word cop - meaning to grab.

Whats also interesting are the nicknames that the guards themselves give to the various garda stations around cork.

Graunabrauher : the convalescent home

Mayfield : hill street blues

the bridewell : the office

Douglas : the posh precinct

mahon : fort apache

anglesea street : the hotel
