Geoff Shreeves - The World's Most Insensitive Sports TV
Geoff Shreeves - The World's Most Insensitive Sports TV Interviewer ?
Geoff Shreeves has come if for a lot of criticism for the apparent glee he seemed to experience when he burst the bubble of the unfortunate Branislav Ivanovic after Chelsea's victory in the CL Semi-final.
Lest you’ve been in hiding:
Shreeves: “Can you clear one thing up for us? Were you booked after the penalty?”
Ivanovic: “Yeah, I was.”
Shreeves: “You know that means you’re out of the final now?”
Ivanovic: “Yeah? I don’t know?”
Shreeves: “Unfortunately that means you DON’T play in the final.”
It's been the focus of massive internet interest since.
However Geoff's lack of tact pales into insignificance compared to the comments by a Philidelphia Hack before the '81 SuperBowl :-
The story is recounted by American sports writer Bud Shaw about a press conference with Oakland Raiders quarterback Jim Plunkett before the 1981 Super Bowl.
Plunkett was asked about his parents, the player speaking “in low, respectful tones about growing up in a special needs household, that his mother was blind and that his father, also blind, had passed away”.
A reporter from the Philadelphia tried to jump in with a follow-up question, but kept getting beaten to it by colleagues. About five questions later, when the subject had moved on from Plunkett’s parents, he piped up: “Jimmy, Jimmy? I want to make sure I have this right: was it dead mother, blind father or blind mother, dead father?”
That's not a proper question Stevie, it's a pointless interview really, nobody cares if Ivanovich knew he missed it or not. Considering the fawning over Terry and his other useless interviews of English players and certain managers, Fergie and 'Arry spring to mind, the man's an idiot. No doubt a puppet for the Sky producer though.
He'll get put back in his box, like Burton was if he keeps on with it though.
SKY have a reputation for it though, one of their rugby guys (name escapes me, bald head, glasses) tried to block Andy Robinson from leaving an interview once before, though he was going to swing for him.
What was his purpose in telling Ivanovic he was going to miss the final on national tv? Was he doing Ivanovic a service in doing so? How sound of him. Don't think Ivanovic would have found out otherwise.
Shreeves picked a soft target there. Two minutes later he let Terry away with murder then in stating, "I'm not that type of player". Probed him no further.
Any other weekend you'll find him hanging out of Fergie's ass with the lamest comments and quips you'll hear. If he starts treating strong characters like Fergie/Terry with equal disregard than maybe I'd give Shreeves more credence. But as things stand he is a shit.
