On 12 Jan, 2012,
Cyprus Avenue presents comedian
Ashley Strand, fresh from opening for Mick Foley, performing his one-man show Glorified Disasters.
Edinburgh’s Three Weeks called Strand’s
unique mix of storytelling and stand-up “invigorating” and “commanding” and said, “
Strand needs to go solo, and fast.”
Consumerist excess at a Christmas toilet paper promotion in New York City.
The lengths to which a young actor will go to fit into the cut throat world of Sarasota dinner theatre.
A fight between brothers at the after-party for a children’s musical in Belgium.
Separately, these stories are at turns hilarious, absurd, touching, sad.
Together, they constitute a profound meditation on the sacrifices and sources of a life in the theatre. Ashley has performed these stories in Washington, DC, New York City, Cape Cod, and Edinburgh.
DC Theatre Scene says, “Strand’s ability to wring the extraordinary out of the banal has a redemptive quality to it. Stories that are, on their surface, depressing laments become, under the frenzied scrutiny of Strand’s neurotic over-analysis, life-affirming celebrations.”
Corkonians know Strand from his protean work in Spring Awakening at The Granary and The Everyman Palace Theatres (in which he played 9 roles), his stand-up at City Limits, The Coco Club, The Craichouse, and Rebels Comedy Club, his radio appearances on UCC Radio, Community Radio Youghal, and C103 in Mallow, his performance as the Gatekeeper in Artlink’s Dragon of Shandon Parade, and as Mrs. Beeton, Angry Chef, and Naughty Santa in CIT’s Cook up a Carol, as well as his Shakespearean and stand-up workshops. He also has memorable roles in two of the locally produced Sorcerer’s Apprentice webisodes. Anyone who has enjoyed Strand’s performances won’t want to miss Glorified Disasters.
Jan 12. Doors 8:30 / show 9:30pm. €12/€10.
