Default Cork Computer Clinic Are a Joke!

My brother has an ancient Toshiba laptop which was having perfromance issues as well as office not running properly.

Unfortunately he took it too CCC. They took the laptop uninstalled a few programs and charge him E150! Office still wasnt opening and it was as slow as ever. Oh yeah and for some reason (I still cant figure out this bit) they told him they "put Windows 7" on it! Firstly this was a blatant lie and secondly this laptop is ancient and only has 256 MB of RAM how would it have helped!

I looked at it for 5 mins and saw that the file system was corrupt and needed chkdsk /f. Office problems solved and performance slightly improved (the thing just needs more memory).

These guys are a disgrace to the IT profession I have no idea how they are still in business considering what a bad reputation they have.

While I'm ranting about local businesses I'm not too impressed with Maplins either. I went online to price a 1 GB of memory for the lapop and found a stick for just under €45. I rang Maplins and they were selling the same stick of memory for €98!

My brother crashed his laptop and took it to CCC. Took them longer than expected but they sorted him out. Charge was €150 also - must be their standard tariff for this kind of thing?

Who would recommend instead of them?

I broke my screen and took it to the place on Castle St. As far as I know they do all sorts of repairs, and sell stuff too. I was well impressed with their service. 150 notes for a new screen with a 12 month warranty. They had it back to me in less than two hours.

I think that most people are lot more IT savvy theses days and as long as your not dealing with a hardware issue must people would know someone or failing use online forums (much like this one) they would be able to solve these issues without forking over E150 to the likes of these guys.

About the right price for a 12"/15" -17" can be slightly more...

Ah would yah stop - we have to make a living like

but anyway a lot are over priced..
75 fixed for virus removal/security re-configuration
125 OS repairs/re-installs
150[starting from] windows upgrade (i.e. me to xp, xp to windows 7, vista to xp or windows 7)..

hardware? depends on cost of part. (personally) general rule of thumb is cost of part +50 for fitting. However if it's just a dc socket replacement, then it's cost of socket (usually 5euro max) plus 30 fitting charge.

Motherboards? usually can be sourced fro about 100euro but some will cost more. Such as Aspire 5920/5920g [example] is around 140-150euro+fitting

casings are relatively cheap enough and again cost of part+ small fitting charge.

Batteries? cheap enough on ebay (And if ye can't fit one then ye shouldn't have the bloody machine in first place!).

Chargers? again source on ebay - there cheap enough but do be careful as a lot of Chinese copies are on there and some will cause a lot of harm. A lot don't give out the correct voltage/amps and will blow your mainboard. Just be careful and read the feedback.
