I have an iPhone at the moment, i'm thinking of switching to an Android.
I made the mistake of paying full whack for it. I had the money at the time and I didnt want to be locked into a contract incase something happened my position in work so it made more sense to me to pay the price and get it over with. I was going back and forth listening to rumours that the iPhone 4 was or wasn't being released, and eventually after reading many forums I came to the conclusion that they wouldn't get around to releasing the iPhone 4 last year because they weren't ready yet, especially after the gizmodo scandal with the leaked prototype.
I was wrong. I stupidly bought the 3GS in april and the iPhone 4 came out in June. Apple releases run like clockwork, so if you're going to get one then hold off until the iPhone 5.
A year on and my silent button at the side is broken which is causing the bell symbol to constantly flash on the screen, so the screen lights up every few minutes and it eats the battery, I gotta get this fixed before the thing goes out of warranty. I'm also fully updated but despite the latest operating system claiming to go straight to wi-fi on wake, it doesn't and ends up connecting via cellular data which robs my credit.
Having said all that, I still couldn't live without it, and my separation issues are holding me back from getting what could potentially be a much bigger problem fixed

You know you can get an advanced replacement with Apple for €29? If you have insurance it costs you 35 for a replacement but Apple will replace your 3GS for €29 once something is wrong and it's under guarantee. Either that or you can get it collected and send it off but you'll be without the phone for a few days and it won't cost you anything.

Mattie, that's €1119 for the period of your two year contract. That's actually a fairly good price...for an iphone 4. If it includes internet, it's probably a really good price for Ireland.
To give you an idea of just how expensive that is, you can get an unlocked HTC Wildfire for €280 on Expansys.
Now it's not the fastest smartphone in the world, but I have it and I'm pretty happy with it. The new ability to turn it into a WiFi router is nice too.
The SIM only deals on Vodafone are handy enough, or you could stay on prepay.
Is there a reason why you're staying with Vodafone? They're an awful lot more expensive than the others.
In any case, the HTC Desire HD is as good as the iPhone, with a bigger screen and much faster processor than the Wildfire, but should set you back a couple of hundred euros less.
Incidentally, the battery life on the Wildfire is pretty decent for one of these phones, I usually get about 3 days out of a full charge with a bit of browsing and calling. That's actually quite good for one of these types of phones.
Two other things with the Wildfire.
Firstly, there's a Skype app that works properly with the 3G network. Unreal handy for friends abroad, myself and the missus (or the family) can call and message each other for free. Nice.
Secondly, if you get the HTC Wildfire online with 3, you pay €119 for the phone, €25 a month for 300 minutes or texts.
€719 over 2 years.
The internet seems to be a bit of a rip off, at €10 a month for 1GB.
Personally, I pay £14 a month, got the phone for free, 100 minutes or texts (most of my stuff is international...) and half a gig of data. Ireland's plans seem very expensive in comparison.

Vodafone is the only network with coverage at my mums gaff, where i hang out a fair bit, so i am kinda stuck with them.
Well, the Wildfire is definitely a good option, but I don't think Vodafone offer it.
The Sony Ericsson Xperian X10 Mini is worth looking at, €140 on an upgrade with PAYG, probably less if you bargain. Tiny little thing, but kind of cool, plus it runs Android.

To give you an idea, to download a proper 2 hour movie in decent quality, you'd need at least 700MB.
Youtube HD takes about 300KBps, so 1,500 seconds of HD youtube, roughly half an hour.
It'd be about an hour and a bit of normal quality youtube.
Nice one for that.
So i def wont be downloading any movies on it anyway.
500mb per month and 700mb for one movie.
Feck that.
Ill only use the internet for this place, prob facebook, maybe some online shopping and probably skype or msn.
That should be enough ya?
