Tried a re-install? sometimes progs can get corrupted ..

happens if the HD needs to be defragmented...

also have that but takes a lot longer than VLC used to (when it worked for me!)

Un-installed VLC, restarted, then defrag using O&O pro, downloaded VLC from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

heres what I'm doing then step by step

open vlc
-media
-convert/save
-File
-add
-convert/save-browse to save destination
-Profile Video MPEG4+AAC (MP4)
-Start

I then get error message-

Streaming / Transcoding failed:
VLC could not open the encoder.

At this stage I then have a file saved with a .ps extension, open it with VLC and its an audio of the avi that i'm trying to convert that is only the first 2 minutes of the clip

oh yeah VLC's converter - had a similar problem myself. Just open the avi and play as normal. Click record and it will auto record the avi as an mp4 in your mydocs folder... no need to use the converter which I've found to be buggy as well...

right Smeggle, tried that but its saving the avi in mydocs as "movie.avi.avi" not mp4! presume theres a setting somewhere that I have to change?

got a fix from the videolan forums-

Quote:
Record button does as if copying. So if the input is AVI the output will also be AVI.

Before you do the transcoding, open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2),
however it takes over 2 hrs for an avi movie to convert to mp4!!

while looking for a fix I came across "4Videosoft MKV Video Converter" which converts the same movie in 10 mins! also allows editing/cropping etc
