I understand your frustration about the swimming lanes there. Used to wreck my head when there was only one lane open and it was full of crap swimmers. If your work out is flexible there's plenty of quiet times during the week when you can get a good swim in, but obviously this is easier said than done. As for people swimming in the wrong lane, never hurts to bring it to someone's attention if they're in your way, it's worked for me in the past
Nah, I'm through with it. And there isn't that many quiet times either. Looking at the swimming lesson timetable it's just an overcrowded pool now. I joined another place two days ago and last night I was actually able to swim away for an hour and a half without being blocked by anyone that can't swim. Twas great.
And I also find that in Cork people don't really know proper pool etiquette either, at least that's the case in the Mardyke. It's really up to the lifeguards to ask someone to move into another lane. If a bastard that can't swim is in the fast lane, the lifeguard should ask them to move. I don't consider it my responsibility as a paying customer to help in running the place well.

Do they not have the lanes specifically for "Fast, Medium, Slow"?
How many metres would ye normally do in a session.
Was doing 1000m regularly enough a few months ago but havn't been in ages. You feel great after a good swim.
Nothing like it! I do 1500m twice a week, keeps the body going like
Oh they have 3 different lanes alright, but people never go in the right ones. It's like just because they think they're fast means they are, even when they see themselves crawling in comparison to the rest.
I usually stick to the medium lane because I know my stamina isn't the best to do my whole 1500m in the fast lane a lot of days.
The amount of people who crawl along the medium lane in the Mardyke is unreal. I put it down to their refusal to categorise themselves as 'slow'.
The lifeguards, incidently, couldn't give a toss, they just watch you crawl behind the eejit doing half your pace and they probably smirk at it.

I'd do anything up to 8000m in a session or 160 laps.

I've only ever once seen a lifeguard ask someone to go into a slower lane and that was when a kid tried swimming in the fast lane and it took him about 5 minutes to get from one end of the pool to the other. I actually don't mind what pace people go a such, I mean, there's no harm in being held up for a length, but when they turn around, look at you and fly off knowing they delaying you I just don't get it. There's one guy in particular, a tall skinny grey haired guy with a moustache that should be in the medium lane if not the slow, but he insists on swimming the fast lane and he does exactly this - turns around, looks and takes off.

An Olympic size pool would be great. That is the business like. I don't see why they don't build a one. It's not like it takes up that much space.
it would.and you know what, the mongos would stick to the wall lanes because they wouldnt be sure of themselves and the decent swimmers could torpedo along in the middle.seen it in australia.any chance of a pool that size is long gone now that we(ye)are up shit creek.pity.an island nation full of non swimmers.joke
50m pools would cost a fortune to run, the ammount of water that would have to be heated and circulated is huge.
But deffo think that something like that would be good. and think about the money that could be made from it with the olympics being in london in 2012, great traing facility for a countrys team. Plus there is the chanch of getting tournaments to come here.
Someone should do it...

I posted this in another thread also but might be of interest to someone:
In case anyone is in similar situation - I'm a member of Mardyke gym which is closed due to flooding until at least early February. I've been on lookout for short-term solution and went to see a few gyms today. Many of them require you to commit for x amount of time, but the Montenotte Hotel is doing a once off month long membership for 30€ (have to sign up before months end). This also gives you access to pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steamroom. Going to sign up in next few days. Equipment is decent enough, they do have free weights and machines, and a lot of cardio stuff.
