Default pre-screenings for a tech position

Hi guys,

Have a pre-screening at my university campus on Wed for 12month work placement with Microsoft. College placement officer seems to not be making a big deal about the pre-screenings and still has to send us info regarding them. How would ye treat a pre-screening? Is it a lot more casual than an interview? Casual/business dress? What kind of questions are likely?

Thanks.

Business dress I would think, if it's Microsoft. Expect to be forced into a deep end type position. Buddy of mine did his placement with M$ and ended up a project manager within a few weeks.

I would say it's probably not as important as an interview, but first impressions last so ensure you put yourself forward as well as possible. Very little is casual about M$ from what i hear tbh.

Oh The Soft will probably want to hear how great you are with Teamwork and using your own initiative... They seem like the types to go for that stuff... :P

Congratulations!
I bowed out of taking a position with them many years ago but in the last couple of years the whole developer scenario in Microsoft has blown right up. Developers can blog about what they are doing and share code with the community. I'd say it would be a wicked place to work.
Any idea which team/division you will be working for?

No idea yet, must fill out an evaluation form which includes ranking of 4 positions in order of preference (would like SDE or SDET) and do that coding test before 6th october.

lol

what a pile of cock.

i interviewed with MS too when looking for a placement. I was interviewed by a chick from accenture who wanted to know about my excel and reporting skills. fuck that. I hope it's different now.
They did have some x-boxes in the reception which was the most interesting thing about the place.

Are you sure about that? MS would have thousands of developers, where the main stuff would be done in the US or India. I couldn't see MS's legal people allowing all of them to blog about what they're doing, unless their article had been vetted and tarted up by the marketing people.

My place allows people to blog but it's all internal, and we're quite heavily involved in open source software.

Good luck willow!

Yep I'm sure, check out check out channel9 or the msdn blogs. Phil Haack & Scott Hanselman have excellent blogs.
The are putting loads of code into the community also, their entire MVC stack is open source now. Not saying it's perfect or anything, just that I reckon it would be a much better place to work that it was.
