Default USB sound card/general setup suggestions

Hey,
Got laptop again recently so wanna get making choons for meself. Have a bit o cash to spare to get USB sound card, headphones and some sort of speakers to play it all back on. Not looking at top of the range stuff just setup to use in bedroom really. Was checking out the M-Audio Pro one they have on thomann. Seems to be popular and seems alright. As for the rest wouldn't have more than 350 i reckon for both after so not gonna be able to get anything terrificly good but let me know if you're in the know of some stuff or whatever.( on sound card do want midi send return and headphones jack that'll allow cueing and that)
Cheers

€350 will get you a wicked bad sound card. The M-Audio stuff is very cool. Also have a look into the Native Instruments Kontrol 1. Haven't used it but I've heard some really good things about the Kore system.

what software and what type of music? I'm assuming electronic? if your planning doing much audio recording, firewire would be a better way t o go instead of USB.

I think my computer doesn't have firewire input but I know what you mean in terms of bandwidth and that. I'll prob mostly be using it for electronic stuff with ableton and that. Reckon the two inputs would be fine. Might record some stuff off the microkorg and that into it and possibly some vocals and that. Suppose could be handy for maybe live recordings aswell but not terribly motivated that way like.

If you want to do any DJ'ing type stuff, make sure you get one with 2 stereo outs. One for the music and the other one for cueuing...

Quick question bout my m audio fast track pro, which by the way is a cool sound card but if i were u id obviously go for the newer version( fast track ultra) Anyway when im recording my vinyl for use in serato how would i get the volume at the same levels as ordinary mp3s without the clipping light coming on..I don't want to push up the levels afterwards cause ill probably get a lot of background noise, its probably something very simple

You could try getting a recording program that has "Automatic Gain Control".

I prefer to do it manually myself though, try finding the highest peak in the track by skipping on the needle every bit, and you could set the max to just above that.

If the max peak is hitting -2db than thats fine for me, youll only be losing quality anyway by having it too close to 0.

So once your max peak isnt hitting something like -8db you should be grand.
