Default Argentina Vs Ireland rogby football tests squire

Argentina v Ireland (Sat)

Carney makes full international debut against the Pumas

Saturday, 26 May
Centenario Stadium, Santa Fe
Kick-off: 2010 BST

Former Great Britain rugby league star Brian Carney will make his Ireland debut in the opening Test against Argentina in Santa Fe on Saturday.

The Munster winger is the only new cap in a starting line-up which includes seven Ulster men led by Simon Best.

With Carney on the right wing, Tommy Bowe is on the left with Andrew Trimble in midfield and Isaac Boss and Paddy Wallace at half-back.

Neil Best and Bryan Young are in the pack with Stephen Ferris on the bench.

Carney made his senior rugby union debut for Munster in the victory over Ulster in March when he scored the winning try at Ravenhill.

The 30-year-old qualified lawyer from Cork has impressed O'Sullivan in his handful of games for the province.

With Geordan Murphy named on the bench following Sunday's Heineken Cup final, Connacht's Gavin Duffy is named at full-back.

O'Sullivan has named an inexperienced midfield pairing with Trimble joined by Leinster's Kieran Lewis who made his international debut on the tour to Japan two years ago.

It will be an opportunity for both ourselves and Argentina, for the players to be in the World Cup squad

Eddie O'Sullivan

Trimble has spent limited time at centre having played most of the 14 caps on the wing.

With 15 players who are believed to be the starting line-up for the World Cup remaining at home, coach Eddie O'Sullivan says that this is the final chance for the players on tour to book a ticket for France.

"Everybody has to play well now in these last two games because there will be no future opportunity, as there is only one more camp before we're naming the World Cup squad," said O'Sulivan.

"For sure, we have 50% of the squad in mind, which is the players we left at home. But there are another 30 players here.

"It will be an opportunity for both ourselves and Argentina, for the players to be in the World Cup squad, so I think both teams will play well on Saturday.

"We'll have to position well for set-pieces and keep our discipline."
