Default Most Overrated in Sport

So i was just watching a show on ESPN called

"The Top 20 Most Overrated Sports Figures and Teams"

obviously it had a very American slant so it made me wonder who would we pick on the other side of the Atlantic.

So nominate some players and/or teams from whatever sport(s) you want and back up your argument as to why they are so overrated.

*** this thread will hopefully lead to some great debate and arguement so please keep WUMming to a minimum or out of the thread altogether if possible***

lets get it off to a contoversial start, how about pele?

His legend has been built up so much that it's almost at a point where no one else is allowed to challenge for the right to be called the worlds greatest footballer. I've never seen him play yet for years when asked who's the greatest player ever I always replied pele. It's nearly drilled into you. How do we know he was that good? reports are sketchy, people don't even know how many goals he scored for sure. These days players are scutinised so much it's impossible not to hear of slumps in form, bad games, anonymous games. A FIFA poll a few years ago resulted in Maradona being voted the best player ever, now you might say demographics had a role to play here as the majority of net users are young and wouldn't remember pele. Thats a fair point however i return to the statement that it's almost drilled into us; demostrated perfectly by FIFA deciding the vote didn't go according to plan (clean living, perfect endorsment for the game, Mr. Edson Arantes Do Nasimento aka pele as opposed to the Coke Addicted, pellet gun shooting, adulterous little handballing argentine!) and they changed the rules so that it became a joint award all of a sudden. Shared by Pele and Maradona. If the Yanks done it we'd all be screaming about propoganda!

Anyway, my nomination for most over rated sports star; Pele.

Q an avalanche of posts from fella's citing their ol fella's!!

No, i like it. You put forward an arguement and backed it up. I agree that the rigging of that poll Maradona won a few years back was ridiculous and from the footage i've seen i'm tempted to say Maradona looked more impressive anyway. Compare supporting casts!!!

Anyway good start Superdave. I can't decide what i'm putting forward first yet.

i think in the modern game (of soccer i mean) its rare to find overrated players. the simple fact is that if they dont cut it, there's no place to hide. with the media scrutiny its just not possible to have a run of poor form and get away with it.

i can speak easiest on newcastle. jenas (now departed) and dyer are totally overrated. jenas was arguably a liability whilst dyer was all promise and no punchline.

i completely disagree, because of the money sky have invested its in their interest to overate everything, extravagance and exaggeration has been the name of the game since 1993. i remember the year leeds won the league and you would be lucky to get a few crunch games on ITV, then Sky(Man U) took over and it was total over exposure. every nil all was a cracker and still is and "the most exciting/best league in the world TM" had arrived overnight. only united and aresnal have really risen above mediocrity and in general the league's performance in european competitons(the only true barometer for a league's strength), depite being the most cash rich, has been awful. as a result of this perpetual onslaught of hyperbole, people also seem to have an inflated opinion of the players, hence then the complete puzzlement when the so called best midfielders in the world, beckham, lampard and gerrard, cant keep the ball when they play a technical european team. last year against spain and portugal being perfect examples.
so i'm submiting the premier league and a whole lot of its top players to the overated list.

for the record. imo the most overated players
Rio ferdinand, david Beckham

After living in the states I used to think that it was baseball but at least you could get beer and food at the games but now it has to be premiership football i.e. Liverpool & Man. United cancelling each other out last Sunday at midday - hyped to the rafters by Sky. The league is full of edgy fearfull top teams afraid to have a go.When Manyoo and Arse were winning at the top at least they were playing exciting football - what a yawn we have now.See how the British Isles national squads are doing right now in the world cup qualifiers.People are starting not to bother with it.Sky should come over and watch any game of hurling to see passion and excitement by amateurs not ferrari driving tossers.Rugby is also taking over for excitement levels.
Barclays Premiership by a mile.

we are very lucky to have the game of hurling, it rearely ceases to live up to its billing, even so called poor games blow most soccer games out of the water, this contrast was very evident to me this summer when i would sometimes turn over after watciing the hurling to the second half of a sky game, and the pace and excitement level difference between the sports was amazing.

the lions tour also goes in the box for hype(again a lot to do with sky). even after the first 2 damp squib performances in the tests, they were still talking it up the 3rd

most overrated player for me in henry,

didn't even get a game for juventus when he was with em
and he moves to a league that has defences ( chelski excluded ) on a bar with those in La Liga.

Hes done SFA with france, by SFA im talking comparativly with his premership dominance, he has scored 30 for em i suppose.

And in european competition he's one of the laughing stocks.

Take shevchenko, joined milan in 99,
top scorer 2 years in a row, and in 2003 aswell.

Won the champions league.

An now has led his national side into the world cup for the first time in their history.

This is the guy all the prise should be about, not that overrated pratt HENRY

I'll put up a file in a while which shows what Pele was capable of. He could do everything better than everybody else. Heading, dribbling, volleying, shooting, left foot, right foot.
The guy was phenomenon.
He scored over 1100 goals for Santos, played in 4 world cups, on the winning team in three. That's just incredible
