Default 2019 Munster Hurling Championship

Munster Senior Hurling Championship to have rest week in 2019

Munster GAA have announced that the provincial hurling championship will start a week earlier in 2019 to allow for a rest weekend.

While the new hurling format was largely well received in 2018, one apparent flaw of the new structure which was largely criticised was that teams who had to play four weekends in a row were disadvantaged. Tipperary and Waterford, the two sides who didn't have a rest week, finished fourth and fifth in the round-robin respectively.

Limerick, Cork and Clare benefited from having a break weekend in the middle of what was a hectic schedule, as the Banner and Rebels reached the provincial final, while the Treaty were able to use the provincial campaign as a springboard for All-Ireland success.
The Munster Council announced the news on Friday afternoon.

"2019 Munster Senior Hurling Championship - the first round of games will begin on week ending May 12th (one week earlier than 2018 ) and the Munster Championship will be run over 6 weeks, allowing a break weekend for all counties midway through the round-robin series. The final round of games will take place on week ending June 16th."

This is likely to be well received, and it remains to be seen if the Leinster Council will make a similar arrangement.
