Do any political party spare a thought for those who pay mortgages, have child care costs, have long commutes, ? or is only populist stuff that counts?

All major parties have them in mind because they, like pensioners, are more likely to vote than those further down the socioeconomic scale.

They're talking about discouraging people to use diesel.

In that case, might I suggest that they reduce the level of excise duty on petrol, thereby eliminating the price advantage that diesel currently has?

Although knowing the way they think, they'll probably increase the level of duty on diesel instead.
