A 16-year-old passenger in the first car, a Ford Mondeo, was seriously injured and removed by ambulance to hospital, where he later died.
Four other occupants of the car were removed to hospital and one of them, a man in his early 20s was described as being in a critical condition.
Gardaí arrested a man in his late 20s at the scene. Its understood he was the driver of the second car, a Golf.
He was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and brought to Gurranebraher garda station for questioning.
Gardaí closed off the road to allow a garda forensic crash investigator examine the scene while both vehicles remain at the scene this morning.
Any witnesses are asked to contact Gurranabraher gardaí.

Look at the bigger picture, someone has still lost a child. Getting to work would be the least of my worries.
