Default Ireland - World's Top Major Winner.

Fred Daly won the Open (British Open) Golf Championship in 1947 - Ireland did not produce another Major Winner until Padraig Harrinton won the Open in 2007 - that's a gap of 60 years

Incredibly, since then - of the 22 Majors that have been played, 7 of them have been won by Irish Golfers. That's almost 1 in every 3.

That trend is likely to continue with Rory McIlroy, G Mac and Padraig Harrington now regularly challenging in these events.

The level of golfing success currently being enjoyed by this Island's Golfers is unpredecented and contrasts starkly with our much larger neighbouring Island's achievements or lack thereof - No major success in this period.

Comment on this extraordinary achievement ?

Please don't bore readers with another 'Rory is British' tirade - I'm talking about the Island we live on not who governs where. We are all part of the same golfing family or association - The GUI.

Two Irish major winners. The others are British. It's a fact.

No argument on that.

My point is that this Island of Ireland where golf is controlled and governed by the GUI and whose home champoinship is the Irish Open - recently played in N Ireland has produced an extraordinary no of major winners in recent years. That's something that every golf fan - North and South, takes pride in.

Long may it continue.

By default. It's the same as the rugger the northies would get out of it they could.

Us Irish give out when the Brits claim Irish people as theirs like we saw with Katie Taylor last week, yet some are very quick to claim people who identify themselves as British as our own. We can't have it both ways.

To be factually correct Great Britian consists of England Wales and Scotland therefore Northern Ireland is not in Great Britian ie is not British--althought it is in the UK --citizens of NI are Irish although they have UK citizenship. Tell Paddy Barnes that he is not Irish!

Not about geography, about identity.
