Default Car Warranties

Why is it that almost all European car makers offer their UK customers a 3 year warranty and the exact same cars are sold here with just a 2 year warranty?

I get an email every so often from Volvo UK asking me if I am happy with the car and the service in the local Volvo dealer: every time, I give them an earful about their warranty discrimination: but no effect, so far.
