The Frank & Walters, Marlene Enright and Ye Vagabonds play Cork Opera House with the COH Concert Orchestra

On Saturday 2 June the audience will be immersed in a rare and specially curated experience as the orchestra under the baton of John O’Brien will perform on stage with Marlene Enright and Band, Ye Vagabonds and Cork legends The Frank & Walters. This unique arrangement will allow the audience to hear the music of these performers in a new and all-encompassing way in the main auditorium.

Tickets €25 on sale from https://www.corkoperahouse.ie/event/...ra/2018-06-02/ and direct from Cork Opera House Box Office

The Frank and Walters

The Frank & Walters will finally realise a lifetime ambition to perform their songs with a full orchestra. Under conductor John O Brien the Franks will perform songs from across their career.

It’s been an eventful few years for the band with the release of their latest album Songs for the Walking Wounded in 2016 and a European tour in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their 2nd album Grand Parade in 2017.

2018 had began with the band beginning work on the next album when, twenty five years after they gate crashed the UK Top 20 with their seminal hit ‘After All’, the track found a whole new audience following a classic television moment on the RTE/BBC production The Young Offenders.

As the captives of a lovably psychotic Billy Murphy broke into the indie anthem on a Cork bus, so began the track’s whirlwind ascent of music charts both here and in the UK, culminating in a mid-week position of Number 1 on the i-Tunes download chart. A little more than 25 years to the day since the Franks played ‘After All’ on BBC’s flagship music show, Top of the Pops, the melodic hit once again reminded listeners that good tunes simply never go away.

“The Frank and Walters create music as timeless and classic as their heroes The Beatles and Brian Wilson. But it’s their decency and kindness, in a music biz of sharks, that will always endear them to me” – Ken Sweeney

Marlene Enright

Marlene Enright’s solo debut, Placemats and Second Cuts, showcases her passions and influences. The RTE Choice Music Prize Nominee wrote and recorded the record over a year, the resulting body of work a melange of the heavy grooves of RnB, the warmth and nostalgia of great folk songs and the richness of thickly layered harmonies. It is the sound of modern roots music, evolved as it has over decades to something that is unmistakably 21st Century, while still carrying echoes of the past.

The title, Placemats and Second Cuts, a line from the outro of the album’s closing song, is fitting for this album offers depth and introspection. Enright says, “Hindsight has made me realise that it’s a much more self-reflective album than I initially realised. It speaks of self-doubt, dancing the fine line between feeling comfortable in your own skin and feeling totally lost at sea, indecisiveness, the battle between strength and weakness, passion and apathy, belonging and isolation and self-acceptance.”

“brilliantly played and superbly produced…ambitious, free-flowing alternative pop songs….a seriously accomplished debut album” ****The Irish Times

Ye Vagabonds

Brothers Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn grew up playing music together around their hometown of Carlow, a small town in the southeast of Ireland. After moving to Dublin in 2012, they quickly became a staple of the live music and session scene in Ireland, playing their own original songs as well as folk songs from Ireland, Scotland, England and America.

After a chance meeting at Electric Picnic in September 2015, the brothers performed onstage with Glen Hansard, who invited them to open for him on his European tour the following October.

Since 2015, they have been busy touring Ireland, the UK and Europe, opening for acts such as Villagers, Roy Harper and Lisa Hannigan.

In October 2017 they launched their debut, self-titled album to great acclaim. “Ye Vagabonds” comprises of harmony rich folk music, influenced by Irish traditional music, Appalachian singing, and the 1960’s folk revival.

Their second album is scheduled for release early 2018.

“They remind me of my first days at ‘Les Cousins’ in Soho in 1965… Ye Vagabonds are a modern expression of a tradition that is truly robust and important to these islands.” Roy Harper

Iarla Ó Lionáird & Steve Cooney

Renowned two-time Grammy nominee Iarla Ó Lionáird is best known for his unmistakable voice and distinctive sean nós style as part of the stunningly successful group The Gloaming. For this very special concert his is accompanied by acoustic guitar virtuoso Steve Cooney. Ó Lionáird has carved a long and unique career in music both internationally and in Ireland. From his iconic early recording of the vision song Aisling Gheal as a young boy to his ground breaking recordings with Dublin’s Crash Ensemble and New York’s Alarm Will Sound, he has shown a breadth of artistic ambition that sets him apart in the Irish Music fraternity. Born and bred in Cúil Aodha, in the West Cork Gaeltacht, with Seán Ó Riada as neighbour and an indisputable early influence. Twice Grammy nominated, Ó Lionáird has worked with a stellar cast of composers internationally including Donnacha Dennehy, Dan Trueman, Nico Muhly, Gavin Bryars and David Lang and he has performed and recorded with such luminaries as Peter Gabriel, Nick Cave, Robert Plant and Sinéad O’Connor. His unique singing style has carried him to stages and concert halls all over the world, from New York’s Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House and beyond.

His voice has graced the silver screen also, with film credits extending from The Gangs of New York to Hotel Rwanda and most recently as featured singer in the film Brooklyn starring Saoirse Ronan. He is the vocalist with the critically acclaimed Irish/American band The Gloaming.

Steve Cooney has been described by the Irish Times as a ‘musical polymath’ and is best known for his development of an influential style of guitar accompaniment to traditional Irish dance music, for which he won the National Entertainment Award in 1997. He came to Ireland from Australia in 1980 and maintains his connections with the Aboriginal culture there, into which he was initiated. He has Irish ancestral links with Tipperary, Cavan and Galway. He has participated in making more than 100 CD’s, either as a guitar or bass player or as producer and engineer. A poet and songwriter, he has worked with many iconic international artists from rock and roll and country music but his primarily focus is Irish traditional music. He is a guest lecturer in a number of tertiary institutions and has invented an innovative system of teaching music to children, for which he is studying for a PhD. Seamus Heaney wrote at the Fiddler’s Green Festival in Rostrevor: ‘Master Cooney restores the ancient link between lyre and lyric, between poetry and performance, the rhapsody and rascality’.

Having sold out their shows with the Cork Opera House Orchestra in the main auditorium last year, Jack O Rourke & Anna Mitchell return to Right Here Right Now Festival for band shows in the intimate setting of The Right Room.

Get your tickets here https://www.corkoperahouse.ie/event/...18/2018-06-01/

Sunday 3rd June 2018, 10pm, €20*.

This special gig will take place in the intimate setting of The Right Room, a unique venue on the main stage of Cork Opera House as part of the Right Right Here Right Now Festival 2018 with Coughlan's Live

Jack O’Rourke

The figure of Jack O’Rourke hunched over piano keys or icy synths is something to behold. His wide ranging voice, somewhere between velvet baritone and ethereal falsetto and the unique craft of his songwriting makes him one of Ireland’s most compelling artists. Whether performing solo, with strings or with his incredible rock band, Jack’s honest and raw performances are unique.

Jack’s critically acclaimed debut album, “Dreamcatcher” reached no. 5 on The Irish Album Charts. Jack’s songs are strikingly honest and individual, personal and political. Excavating the worlds of folk, rock, blues, jazz, electronic and even chamber music, Jack absorbs these traditions and fuses them with his own outlook and melodic flair.

Jack’s composition, “Silence” was the anthem for the Marriage Equality Referendum and it won an International Song writing Award judged by Tom Waits, Lorde and Bill Withers, which he performed on a coveted slot on The Late Late Show.

After playing the main festival circuit – Other Voices, Electric Picnic, Groove, Sea Sessions and Indiependence, Jack performed his entire album accompanied by a 25 piece orchestra to a sold out crowd at Cork Opera House. He collaborated with Leonard Cohen muse Hattie Webb, Marlene Enright, electro pioneers Kormac and freezerRoom.

“This is a seriously good album from a seriously good songwriter. ★★★★” — Tony Clayton Lea, The Irish Times

Anna Mitchell

Anna Mitchell revealed the release of her self-titled second album in Ireland in January 2018.

Anna Mitchell intertwines fragility and power, a record made with confidence, intuition and empathy, assuredly alternating between sparse, atmospheric grooves and slightly gnarled, expansively lovely distorted grungy folk, rock.

The album’s tone varies from the back room bar brawl of ‘Get Out’ to the hypnotic ‘Never Learn’, taking in the blues rock of ‘Dog track’ and the epic ‘Better Life’, demonstrating a confidence in the performer and songwriter. You might also hear echoes of; Pj Harvey, Sharon Van Etten, Portishead, The Posies, Fleetwood Mac, Lana Del Ray. Angel Olsen , Lucinda Williams, The Felice Brothers, Hurray For The Riff Raff.

This is an album that Anna has decided to self-title, has chosen to put her name to. It’s something that’s private but comfortable enough to be shared, a personal celebration.

“If David Lynch were to reset Blue Velvet in the wilds of West Cork, then Anna Mitchell’s evocative, dark songs of life and love’s painful kiss would sit well on the soundtrack. ★ ★ ★ ★” — The Irish Times

This gig is strictly over 18’s.
