I don't think there is a "normal" reaction to such a thing. There are many different reactions.

Again, "they hurt one of mine so I will hurt one of them" is the basis of almost every human conflict. It may not be normal in your eyes, but it is extremely common.

His thinking was wrong, he acknowledges that it was wrong.

This idea that we have to crucify people for past actions, particularly then they have learned from and grown away from those actions, is damaging imo. That's what I have an issue with.
