I've found that an effective way to convince people of the lack of a requirement for an apostrophe in a sentence like The dog chased its tail is to point out that we don't write The man drove he's car.

Try it. Spread the word.
"hi's car" would read better?

Mmmm, not sure. It's the apostrophe that throws people, all right, but if you give them the example of his/he's, they can grasp that while an apostrophe can signify possession, it's more complex than they thought.

Well now FishY, I'd like to point out that your comparative examples aren't entirely comparative. It would either be The dog chased his tail, or The man drove his car, or The human drove its car (which is still a bit awks TBPHWYFWIW)

Maybe so! Maybe so!

It's the apostrophe that needs to be shown to be the crux of the question, I think.

We need to show people that his, hers, theirs and ours don't require an apostrophe to denote possession, and neither does its.
